Mayo Clinic study finds dramatic rise in skin cancer in young adults ...

? Skin Cancer news ? Apr 02, 2012

Even as the rates of some cancers are falling, Mayo Clinic is seeing an alarming trend: the dramatic rise of skin cancer, especially among people under 40. According to a study by Mayo Clinic researchers published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the incidence of melanoma has escalated, and young women are the hardest hit.

?We anticipated we?d find rising rates, as other studies are suggesting, but we found an even higher incidence than the National Cancer Institute had reported using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result database, and in particular, a dramatic rise in women in their 20s and 30s,? says lead investigator Jerry Brewer, M.D., a Mayo Clinic dermatologist. Researchers conducted a population-based study using records from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, a decades-long database of all patient care in Olmsted County, Minn. They looked for first-time diagnoses of melanoma in patients 18 to 39 from 1970 to 2009. The study found the incidence of melanoma increased eightfold among young women and fourfold among young men. The lifetime risk of melanoma is higher in males than females, but the opposite is true in young adults and adolescents, Dr. Brewer says.

Researchers also found mortality rates from the disease have improved over the years, likely due to early detection of skin cancer and prompt medical care.

?People are now more aware of their skin and of the need to see a doctor when they see changes,? Dr. Brewer says. ?As a result, many cases may be caught before the cancer advances to a deep melanoma, which is harder to treat.?

The researchers speculate that the use of indoor tanning beds is a key culprit in the rising cancer rate in young women.

?A recent study reported that people who use indoor tanning beds frequently are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma, and we know young women are more likely to use them than young men,? Dr. Brewer says. Despite abundant information about the dangers of tanning beds, he adds, young women continue to use them. ?The results of this study emphasize the importance of active interventions to decrease risk factors for skin cancer and, in particular, to continue to alert young women that indoor tanning has carcinogenic effects that increase the risk of melanoma.?

Skin Cancer on the Rise
The number of nonmelanoma skin cancers continues to rise, with an estimated 3.7 million cases in the U.S. in 2009.

That?s the latest figure from researchers who last year reported that more than 2 million Americans were treated for 3.5 million nonmelanoma skin cancers?mainly basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas?in 2006.

Although these skin cancers can be easily treated if detected early, ?the long-established culture of tanning is creating a huge public health problem,? says Brett M. Coldiron, MD, clinical associate professor of dermatology at the University of Cincinnati.

Janey Helland, of Mapleton, Minn., didn?t think twice when tanning in high school and college.

?I used tanning beds to get ready for homecoming and prom,? she says. ?In college, I tanned before a trip to Barbados because I didn?t want to get sunburned.? At age 21, Helland noticed an abnormal spot on her leg. It was melanoma, and the diagnosis changed Helland?s life. ?I really didn?t know what my future was going to look like, or if I?d even have one.?

For both studies, Coldiron and colleagues used Medicare claims data to count the number of skin cancer removal procedures among Medicare recipients and extrapolated figures to the rest of the population.

Their earlier report, published last year in the Archives of Dermatology, showed skin cancer removals among Medicare patients increased on average 4% a year from 1992 to 2006.

The new findings, presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), showed that procedures among Medicare patients increased an additional 2.4% from 2006 to 2007, 2.6% from 2007-2008, and an additional 1.6% in 2009.

Two years later, she is cancer-free and dedicated to educating others. ?I would advocate that it?s better to be safe than sorry,? she says. ?My advice is to educate yourself and research the risk factors.?

Childhood sunburns and ultraviolet exposure in adulthood may also contribute to melanoma development, the researchers say.

Rates of deadly skin cancer have almost doubled in some areas in less than a decade, stark figures showed yesterday.

Across England, rates of malignant melanoma have shot up by 46 per cent in just seven years - making it the fastest growing cancer.

But in Yorkshire, there were 80 per cent more cases of this type of skin cancer in 2004 than in 1997, as people ignore warnings to stay out of the sun.

The Conservatives, who uncovered the disturbing statistics, slammed the Government for ignoring the risk and cutting funding for campaigns to educate people about the dangers of over-exposure.

Health spokesman Andrew Lansley said: ?These figures are deeply concerning, especially the stark regional disparities.

?A relatively high level of melanoma is to be expected in sunnier regions where there is more outdoor activity as in the south west, but this is not the case in the north where incidences have risen well above the national average.

?In their dithering and short-term thinking, Labour have failed to make helping people understand how to stay healthy a priority.

?It?s telling that they cut funding for their main information campaign against skin cancer just after the worst of the NHS financial crisis.

European stocks rebound as euro ministers meet

(AP) ? European markets recovered some ground Friday, after sharp losses this week, as finance ministers from the 17 euro countries discussed whether to increase the amount of resources at their disposal for future bailouts.

Though the target of ?1 trillion ($1.3 trillion) requested by a number of international institutions, as well as the U.S. and China, is unlikely to be met, it appeared the ministers would agree to increase the firewall to around ?800 billion.

Some ?300 billion ($398 billion) of that has already been spent in the bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal, meaning ?500 million would be left to fund new rescue packages.

Germany, the eurozone's largest economy and the biggest contributor to the bailout funds, has signaled it would agree to such a proposal.

"The hope is that Germany will soften its stance and allow the various bailout funds to be enlarged, providing more firepower to combat the crisis," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index.

Many in the markets see increasing the firewall as a sure step in dampening down the debt crisis, which has crippled the eurozone for the past couple of years. The fear is that the euro bloc just won't have enough resources to help out Spain and Italy, should they need outside help.

Worries that Spain will be dragged into the debt crisis mire has weighed on markets this week. The new Spanish government is expected to unveil a tough budget later as it attempts to get the deficit down to levels sanctioned by its partners.

Even if a deal to increase the bailout resources is approved at the euro meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, there are many doubts over whether Italy or Spain, the eurozone's third and fourth largest economies could be saved if the markets lose confidence.

"The reality is that the firewall is likely to be both underwhelming and insufficient to deal with potential problems in Spain and Italy," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital.

For now, European stocks have recovered some of their losses this week. Germany's DAX was up 0.8 percent at 6,931 while the CAC-40 in France rose 0.9 percent to 3,413. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.5 percent to 5,769.

Wall Street was poised for a solid opening too, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures up 0.3 percent.

The euro was also 0.3 percent higher at $1.337, supported by figures showing inflation in the eurozone in March only fell to 2.6 percent from the previous month's 2.7 percent. The market consensus had been for a fall to 2.5 percent.

Earlier in Asia, sentiment in stock markets was hurt by news that Japan's factory production fell a worse-than-expected 1.2 percent in February ? its first decline in three months ? as demand for exports weakened. The Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo fell 0.3 percent to close at 10,083.56.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.3 percent to 20,555.58, while mainland Chinese shares were mixed. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.5 percent to 2,262.79 while the Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.4 percent to 891.84.

Oil prices bounced back alongside equities ? benchmark oil for May delivery was up 32 cents to $103.12 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Thursday, the contract plunged $2.63 to $102.78 after French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said there's a "good chance" that the U.S. and Europe will agree to release some of their oil reserves.

Student Finds Bags Of Sunken Treasure In Oakland's Lake Merritt During School Trash Cleanup

Sixth-grade students at St. Paul's Episcopal School in Oakland, Calif. weren't looking to be thanked when they volunteered to pick up garbage around a local lake as part of a school cleanup project on Thursday.

But one 11-year-old girl pulling bags of trash from the water seemed to get a cosmic reward when she spotted two bags sticking out of the lake that ended up being filled with over 100 pieces of antique jewelry, foreign coins, rings, bracelets, and even military medals, the Associated Press reports.

"I think (the items) belong to different people and are from different parts of the world. There were rings of different sizes. Coins with pictures of Christ and others with a picture of a menorah. A lot of diversity," the student told the Oakland Tribune, requesting that her name not be published in case the items were involved in a crime.

Students at St. Episcopal, who help clean the lake every Thursday as part of a long-standing community service project at the school, said they usually find wallets, cell phones, and clothing items while cleaning.

"We find a lot of stuff, a lot of tennis balls and things, but no, never that," one sixth-grader told the San Francisco Chronicle. "It was basically the best thing we ever found in there."

As students might have expected, police confiscated the items in order to do an investigation and hopefully return them to their rightful owners.

Check out more photos of the students and their treasure:

Skin cancer groups join together to commend national ...

Group urges provinces to take quick action for patients with deadly form of skin cancer

VANCOUVER, BC, March 30, 2012 ? National skin cancer groups have come together to commend pCODR (pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review), for recognizing the clinical value of the newest treatments for melanoma. Joining the Save Your Skin Foundation are the Alberta Society of Melanoma, The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance.

?This news is the hope the melanoma community has been waiting on for years,? said Kathy Barnard, founder of Save Your Skin Foundation and a melanoma patient herself. ?Recently there have been great strides in terms of skin cancer prevention with several provinces moving to implement tanning bed legislation. It?s now time to turn to treating this deadly cancer and today?s announcement is a step in the right direction. We are hopeful that the provinces will continue to put emphasis on the importance of melanoma and make these two treatments available to patients as soon as possible.?

In its late stages, the average life expectancy for melanoma is just six months, with a one-year survival rate of only 25 percent, making metastatic melanoma one of the most aggressive forms of cancer and one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. An estimated 5,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year and 950 will die from it. Melanoma is responsible for 75 percent of the deaths associated with skin cancer.

?This is a major first step and shows that pCODR has recognized the significant progress these two treatments represent for patients,? said Dr. Jo?l Claveau, Dermatologist at the Melanoma and Pigmented Lesions Clinic, Hospital H?tel-Dieu de Qu?bec. ?Physicians have desperately needed new advances and it?s encouraging that now we have two new options. Historically melanoma is a difficult cancer to treat and now with Yervoy and Zelboraf we have a chance to make a difference in survival for patients.?

About Melanoma in Canada
Every year, thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with melanoma, with the incidence of the disease increasing faster than that of any other cancer. Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) located in the skin. One in 74 men and 1 in 90 women are expected to develop melanoma during their lifetime; 1 in 284 men and 1 in 486 women will die of it. Melanoma is clearly visible on the skin, and 90 per cent of melanomas are caused by exposure to UV light, including tanning beds.

About the Save Your Skin Foundation
The Save Your Skin Foundation is a Canadian not-for-profit foundation. Through events and other initiatives, the Foundation focuses on: raising funds for education and awareness, providing emotional and financial support to those dealing with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and on supporting the ongoing research and treatment of skin cancer ? especially melanoma.

New CEO at IBM revives Augusta membership debate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? The appointment of a new chief executive at IBM has revived the debate over Augusta National's all-male membership just one week before the Masters.

IBM hired Virginia Rometty as its CEO this year, which could mean a break in recent tradition if Augusta sticks to its history of never having a woman as one of its roughly 300 members.

The last four CEOs of IBM all belonged to the club. However, a woman has never worn an Augusta green jacket since it opened in 1933.

"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening from Washington.

It was Burk who led an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for Augusta to admit a female member, demanding that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of the discrimination. Hootie Johnson, club chairman at the time, said Augusta would not be pressured to take a female member "at the point of a bayonet."

"IBM is in a bigger bind than the club," Burk said. "The club trashed their image years ago. IBM is a corporation. They ought to care about the brand, and they ought to care about what people think. And if they're not careful, they might undermine their new CEO."

Augusta National declined comment, keeping with its policy of not discussing membership.

Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, took over as club chairman in 2006. He said that day the home of the Masters "has no specific timetable" for admitting women. The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters, and both times, he said membership issues were private.

Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the previous three CEOs also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Open.

Johnson wound up doing away with television sponsorship for two years to keep the Masters' corporate partners out of the fray.

Burk doesn't believe it should be that simple this time.

"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.

"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."

Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.

IBM has not commented.

"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.' "

The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily.

Augusta National does not ban women. They can play the golf course, but no woman has worn an Augusta green jacket, a status symbol in business and golf.

Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.

The new CEO has been named to Fortune magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" for the last seven years, and was at No. 7 a year ago. She started with IBM in 1981.

"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," she said.

Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. Now, she said she runs the Corporate Accountability Project for the council, a project born from her battle with Augusta.
