Boesch powers Tigers to 5th win in 6 games

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:55 p.m. ET April 12, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Brennan Boesch drove in four runs on his 27th birthday, leading the Detroit Tigers to their fifth win in six games to start the season, 7-2 over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.

Drew Smyly gave up a run in four-plus innings in his major league debut. Despite having the American League's best record, Tigers starters have not earned a win.

Collin Balester (1-0) won this one with two innings of relief.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 until scoring three runs off Jeff Niemann (0-1) in the fifth. Alex Avila walked and score on Andy Dirks' one-out triple. Ryan Raburn struck out, but Austin Jackson walked and stole second before Boesch's two-run single.

The Rays got a run back on Evan Longoria's RBI single in the seventh, but Jeff Keppinger lined into a double play and Phil Coke retired Ben Zobrist to end the inning. Boesch then hit another two-run single in the bottom of the inning.

Avila hit an RBI triple in the eighth, then scored Detroit's seventh run on a wild pitch.

Smyly had a shaky beginning to his first start, loading the bases on two walks and a single. But Smyly got out of the inning on a pop-up and two strikeouts.

He gave up four hits, walked three and struck out four.

Carlos Pena opened the scoring with a homer in the third. Smyly hit Pena with a pitch to lead off the fifth and was taken out for Balester.

NOTES: Jeremy Hellickson, who was taken to a hospital after being hit in the head during batting practice Wednesday, passed a battery of tests and is expected to make his scheduled start on Saturday in Boston. ... The Tigers are starting the season with nine straight day games, the longest streak by an American League team since the White Sox in 2004.

US grabs lead over China in clean energy race

The United States has regained the lead in the clean energy race, investing $48 billion last year to surpass China, which held the world's top spending spot since 2009, said a study Wednesday.

The US surge in private investment was a 42 percent increase over 2010 and saw Washington maintain its lead worldwide in both venture capital and research and development cash, said the Pew Charitable Trusts annual report on clean energy.

However, the US boom was largely driven by expiring tax incentives, highlighting "a persistent phenomenon in which the country fails to deploy into the marketplace the clean energy innovations it creates in the laboratory," it said.

China, which fell to second, invested $45.5 billion last year, a one percent increase over 2010, but maintained its global lead in wind energy investment and in solar manufacturing, said the report.

Experts say a key difference between the United States and China is in how they attract investment -- China by having solid green energy policies that reassure investors and the United States by offering tax breaks for investment.

"China has been able to fuel its growth by having very consistent and long-term policies in place that really tell investors there is an opportunity for them to make a profit," said Phyllis Cuttino, director of Pew's Clean Energy Program.

"The United States has no renewable energy target but they have decided to try and incentivize clean energy investment through a variety of tax incentives, tax credits, tax subsidies, loan guarantees," she told AFP.

Some of those programs were instituted under the George W. Bush administration and some under President Barack Obama, she said.

"What we saw this year was investors really rushed into the United States to take advantage of those tax credits before they expired."

The Pew report, which focused on private investment in Group of Twenty (G20) nations, also found that total worldwide private investment rose 6.5 percent over 2010 to a record level of $263 billion.

"Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and India were also among the nations that most successfully attracted private investments last year," it said.

Germany ranked third in 2011 after soaring to second place in 2010 as it ramped up both solar and wind power. Private investment dropped five percent last year compared to 2010.

"Germany now obtains more energy from renewable sources than it does from nuclear power, coal, or natural gas," said the report, adding that Italy has also surged, surpassing Germany's deployment of 7.4 gigawatts (GW) of solar.

Italy installed eight GW of solar energy nationwide and investments grew 38 percent to $28 billion, offsetting declines in other parts of Europe as the region struggles with a troubling debt crisis.

"Europe has been a traditional leader, in terms of attracting private investment. Last year they attracted $99 billion in private investment as a region," said Cuttino.

"But Asia and Oceania is a region of the world that is quickly growing so we keep thinking the center of the clean energy economy is moving to this region. They were second in the world attracting $71 billion."

India had the highest rate of growth among G20 nations as investment rose 54 percent to $10.2 billion, largely driven by its National Solar Mission that aims to install 20 GW by 2020.

Japan saw a 23 percent rise to $8.6 billion dollars "and we think there is going to be more growth in Japan as they kind of move away a bit from nuclear power," added Cuttino.

Australia also saw private investment rise 11 percent to $4.9 billion, with four billion of that sum going toward small residential solar projects.

"They have a newly instituted carbon policy and that is the third highest level of investment per GDP (among G20 countries), so they are doing quite well," said Cuttino.

Justin Bieber Will Show Off His 'New And Fresh' Side In 'Boyfriend' Video

'Boyfriend' clip is going to 'make people like the song more,' singer tells MTV News.

Justin Bieber is gradually giving fans a taste of his forthcoming video for "Boyfriend." In the latest tease for the clip, which he tweeted out, several more shots are revealed. They include a watery, booming speaker, Bieber whispering in a pretty girl's ear and the singer standing in silhouette, snapping his fingers in front of the moon.

"I think people are going to be really happy [with the video] and ... I think it's going to make people like the song more," Bieber told MTV News on the set of the video, directed by Colin Tilley. "The album, in general, is just really new and fresh and I think people are going to be really happy to hear it."

The song certainly represents a more mature sound for the 18-year-old, who has abandoned the doo-wop-influenced pop of his past for a Justin Timberlake vibe. But if fans think Believe will sound like "Boyfriend," Bieber explains that this track offers only a sampling of the album's overall sound.

"I think it's part of it," he said. "I mean, my whole album is so different and every song's different on the album, and I think that what's special about it is nothing sounds the same."

After Bieber teased that he'd be hitting the studio with his mentor Usher, the two tweeted a bit more about working together.

"Ohh ... and trust we got a duet coming for 'LOOKING 4 MYSELF' and 'BELIEVE,' " Usher tweeted about working with the teen star on both of their forthcoming albums. "He has come a long way. Proud to see his evolution as an artist!"

Believe will drop later this year, with the "Boyfriend" video dropping sometime soon. Looking for Myself, Usher's next album, will be released in June.

Celebrities dish on relationships, love: 'Think Like A Man' cast hits ...

?Think Like A Man,? a romantic comedy based off Steve Harvey?s best-seller, opens April 20 in theaters nationwide. The book, ?Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment,? was released in 2009.

From chapters about ?mama?s boys? and finances, Harvey?s intent is to educate women on how to succeed in relationships, from the beginning stages to marriage and beyond. He said he originally wrote the book for his daughters and never anticipated its success.

?All I wanted was for the book to be No. 7 on the New York Times Best Seller list,? he said. According to www.steveharvey.com, the book reached No. 1 and remained on the list for 64 weeks. It has sold more than 2 million copies to date and has been translated into more than 30 languages.

Harvey, director Tim Story, producer Will Packer and many of the cast attended a premiere at Atlantic Station on April 3. While on the red carpet, they all shared their views not only the film experience and the book, but their opinions on love, relationships and all that comes with it.

Steve Harvey: author, comedian, actor, philanthropist, radio and television host

Harvey describes his wife, Marjorie, as his best friend, saying, ?I don?t hang out with any dudes. I hang out with my wife, and we have a very simple motto. We form a two-handed circle. That?s it. Nobody is in the circle. We make all our decisions holding hands. We keep all the misinformation out of our lives, and we know the truth. We give a lot of credit to God.?

He said the screenwriters took five chapters out of the book to form the film. Because of this, Harvey shares something special for his fans.

?That?s why we?re going to do a sequel,? he said. ?We are going to do some more chapters.?

When asked to describe everything ? the success of the book as well as the anticipation of the film ? in one word, Harvey said, ?Unbelievable. It?s just a testament to how big God really is.?

Kevin Hart: ?Cedric,? almost divorced

Hart, who is recently divorced, said he essentially played himself ? with a some embellishment, of course.

?I am ?Cedric.? With me going through a divorce, with me experiencing the point of my life where I wanted to be around my friends, I didn?t want anyone else around me ? I was like that.?

He said it helped him with the character?s authenticity. ?People can relate to my character and understand that people have been this guy. I?ve been this guy. I think that makes the movie so much better when you walk away and believe these men and women exist. It makes the movie that much stronger.?

What is this actor/comedian?s best relationship advice?

?Being funny will get you far!? On a more serious note, he said, ?Communication is key. Honesty is key if you are trying to have a good relationship. (For the men), you have to experience lying to see that it doesn?t work. Once you see that it doesn?t work, then you take the honesty route. Then you give women a choice. It?s a much better situation.?

Regina Hall: ?Candace,? Divorced, single mother

Hall said she worked to make sure her character appeared soft, but not bitter because of her marital status.

?I think we always see a lot of portrayals of moms, especially black moms. I did want to show that soft vulnerable side. I tried to provide a balance where she?s single, she?s been hurt by love but she?s not bitter,? she said.

The cast is large, but Hall was fortunate to share the screen with Broadway star Jenifer Lewis. She describes her as ?amazing,? adding, ?She?s a diva and always will be. She?s fabulous to work with. I?m a huge fan of her work.?

Another co-star, Terrence J, is best-known for his hosting gig on BET?s 106 and Park. Hall said, ?He?s so professional and worked so hard. He?s wonderful.?

Gabrielle Union: ?Kristin,? dating Jeremy (Jerry Ferrara), her boyfriend of nine years

Union said people will learn about themselves and others during and after watching the film.

?People are not mind readers. If you don?t tell people what your wants, needs and expectations are, they?re not going to know. I think for some people, this movie will be a revelation.?

She said both men and women will see themselves.

?I think there will be a lot of mama?s boys in the audience and a lot of noncommitters, and a lot of playboys, and hopefully a lot of guys like Gary Owen?s character ? happy, family guys.?

Union, who admits she?s been through ?a lot of relationships,? said the book was full of lessons she had already learned. However, she said it was helpful to others in her life.

?For some of my friends, it was a revelation. I think for some of us, it?s a reminder. Sometimes we act like a moron and think like a dingbat, and this is a nice reminder to use common sense. I think that?s what people mean when they say ?Think Like A Man,? but I think men and women can both use common sense.?

Michael Ealy: ?Dominic,? the dreamer

Ealy said the most fun part of his role was working with Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson. As for the most challenging? ?Not falling in love with Taraji,? he quips.

Like his co-stars, Ealy said the scenes with guys, especially in the gym, were his favorite to film.

?It was like being high school again,? he said. ?That was our barbershop. We actually played in between takes. We went three on three, and the final score was like 54-53 over four days. It was a really good game, and we had fun.?

He said the writing of the film, as well as the cast, makes this film stand out from others.

?Everybody?s characters and their relationships are fleshed out,? he said. ?This whole thing breathes and you?re invested in every single couple, and that?s real.?

Romany Malco: ?Zeke,? the ladies man

Malco, who has also been featured in ?The 40-Year-Old Virgin,? said this movie can?t be categorized as just a romantic comedy.

?I think what makes it stand out is you have guys ? a whole cast of dudes ? talking about relationships. That?s funny, and that?s probably the worst thing that could happen to an individual to fall prey to that kind of advice.?

He said the only time he picks a project is when he knows it will resonate with him. ?What I love about this is that the misinterpretation is that people think Steve Harvey?s book will provide you with the answers to life. The book is $14.99. You won?t get all of life?s answers. People have been reading the Bible for centuries, and they still haven?t figured out (everything).?

Malco said the movie opens dialogue, which leads people on the way to a healthier relationship: ?For me, that?s where the substance comes from.?

Gary Owen: ?Bennett,? happily married guy

In the film, the characters give their honest opinion of the book. In real life, Owen ? actor and comedian ? said he ran from it.

?I wanted no part of it. (My wife, Kenya,) was more familiar with the book,? he said. ?Will Packer, the producer, came at me with the movie. I looked at (Packer?s) track record and I said, ?He believes in it, so I?m just going to roll with this.??

When asked the secret to a happy marriage, Owen said, ?Find a woman and just listen to her and agree. Even if you don?t agree, just agree. It just makes life a lot easier. Nine times out of 10, she?s going to be right anyway.?

Owen could relate to his character ? in most instances.

?It was pretty much me,? he said. ?I?m not as goofy as my character, but in real life I?m happily married.? He said when he goes out, he asks for permission ? or as he puts it: ?It?s not permission. It?s just letting her know where I?m going to be.?

With comedians on set, improvisation on set was a no-brainer. In his scenes with Kevin Hart and the rest of the male cast, Owen said, ?Ninety percent of the stuff was ad-libbed. But that?s the good thing ? if you hire comedians, let them do what they do. Tim (Story) did a good job of that.?

Unified Communications Explained | Share Tutorial Programing

According to the International Design Consortium, unified marketing communications is an industry term used to describe all varieties of call and multimedia/cross-media message-management operates controlled by an individual user for both organization and social purposes. This includes any organization informational or transactional application process that emulates a person user and relies on a single, content-independent personal message channel (mailbox) pertaining to contact access.

Just what exactly does all this techie mumbo jumbo mean on the average person? Basically it is the process of taking organization phone systems emails out of the Phone Companies hands & placing the item under a Broadband Internet link instead. Unified communications take advantage of new technologies to be able to integrate and enhance messages from quite a few sources. For instance, an unified messaging system lets you access a number of phone lines, telemarketer firms, e-mail, fax and instant messaging from one place. These solutions break down sales and marketing communications barriers so that it truly is easier and quicker for you to find, attain and communicate with others, and vice versa.

Dependant upon where you are and just what the situation requires, your decision for the device you have (cell phone, PDA, journal desktop computer, fax equipment) is likely to change, as is also the mode involving communicating (traditional phone service, IP telephony, cellphone, call center, text message, Internet marketing, etc.). Everyone else is having the same problem. So, while it can be nice to have these handy tools, it?s actually a chore to remember different numbers, and to consistently check different providers for messages.

The thought of unified communications should be to take all of the varieties of communication used by a business & combine them in one easy to use entry way. This could include pairing VoIP, video conferencing, email, messaging, cell phones, direct marketing companies, home phones, place of work phones etc.

Inside discussions of specific communications, the term ?presence? is often brought up. This is an additional industry term used to spell it out the availability and willingness of a person to convey. An example of presence would be an Instant Messaging services that allows your acquaintances to indicate whether they are available, using a status upgrade. Presence can also illustrate the ability to not only determine if someone is hard to get at, but to also learn where your get in touch with is & how you can get a hold of them.

Even when your presence could be monitored and shared with unified communications, calling you might still be difficult when your access point (email address, company phone, home phone, mobile phone etc) is not accessible or known. Today say you have five strategies to be contacted, would certainly your contacts like to keep or realize five different pieces of information to be able to get in touch with you anytime they desire? With unified sales and marketing communications, you will have one entry way (one number) through which people can contact you, whether they are using their computer?s instant messenger, their softphone, their IP phone, email etcetera.

Investing in Guns Stocks: Boom Times for Sturm Ruger (RGR) and ...

Record Orders at Sturm, Ruger & Co.

Sturm, Ruger & Co. (NYSE: RGR) said it received orders for more than one million units in the first quarter, forcing the company to stop accepting new orders.

"Despite the company's continuing successful efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity...consequently, the company has temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders," CEO Michael O. Fifer said in a statement.

Here's what's fueling the feeding frenzy in firearms...

In good times and bad, sales of firearms have proven steady and relatively immune to the economic cycles that trouble other industries.

But nothing fuels gun sales like uncertainty, and nothing fuels uncertainty like an election--- especially one that puts a Democrat in the White House.

Whether that's rational or not, firearm sales increased dramatically in the wake of the financial crisis in 2008 and as Barack Obama took office in 2009.

"People were rushing out to buy guns, because they were worried [President Obama] was going to take their guns away," William J. Vizzard, professor of criminal justice at California State University told the Huffington Post. "He didn't have a single proposal on the table for gun laws. It defies reason. It's a culture unto itself."

Now, Americans are once again scrambling to buy guns on fears that the president will be reelected. They reason that as a second-term president, he will be free to impose new restrictions on firearms without having to worry about getting re-elected.

In fact, according to National Rifle Association (NRA) President Wayne LaPierre, the administration's policies are "part of a massive Obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the Second Amendment during his second term."

For decades, the NRA has been beating the drum of individual gun ownership as a sacred part of American freedom, wielding its power in Washington to beat back proposed restrictions on the right to bear arms.

The general state of the economy is also helping to boost gun stocks.

Americans are constantly bombarded with media reports of doomsday scenarios, dollar devaluation and economic chaos.

Many take this end-of-the-world scenario very seriously, and are arming themselves to the teeth to protect themselves.

"Indicators reveal growing interest among citizens, particularly women, in owning a firearm for personal and home protection," the NSSF noted in its statement.

Investing in Gun Stocks (RGR, SWHC)

With customer demand exploding, the firearms market represents a tantalizing opportunity for investors.

Unlike many industries where a handful of major players dominate, the industry is composed of about 300 companies with combined annual revenue of about $6 billion.

"If you put the whole industry together, you still wouldn't have one Fortune 500 company," said David Kopel, an analyst at the Cato Institute.
But two of the most recognized names -- Sturm, Ruger and Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (NASDAQ: SWHC) - might be worth a look.

Both are pure plays on the business of manufacturing firearms and ammunition. Both are considered small caps, with a total valuation under $1 billion.

And both have seen their stock prices soar recently. Over the past 12 months, SWHC's stock price is up a whopping 132% while RGR has posted a 123% increase.

That has catapulted Smith & Wesson to a sky-high P/E of 126, and 5 times book value.

Meanwhile, Ruger is trading at a more reasonable, but still expensive P/E of 24.

In other words, you might want to wait for the market to correct a bit before plunging in.

But companies like Smith & Wesson and Ruger are still in the bullseye of gun demand.

Election-year politics and an uncertain economy could make it a memorable year for gun owners and gun stock investors alike.
