Breaking: We still have no idea what Samsung's 'next Galaxy' will bring

Not the Samsung Galaxy S III

Unless you count any of the past months' fake renders and fan-made mock-ups (like the one above), Samsung's done a great job of  keeping the Galaxy S III next Galaxy under wraps. So much so that a sort of online news vacuum has developed, which, in the absence of any actual news, draws in unsubstantiated rumors and speculation. As the phone's May 3 unveiling draws near, we're seeing even more reports of what "might" be coming in Samsung's next flagship product.

Firstly, let's look at what we do know. Yesterday's press invite references the "next Galaxy" smartphone, and in an interview with BNN.ca, Samsung Canada's VP of Mobile Communications, Paul Brannen, says that it'll be a "flagship" phone, and the next evolution of the Galaxy line. Neither mentioned any specific branding, and Brannen in particular seemed to go out of his way to avoid doing so (for obvious reasons.)

Today's latest set of rumors comes from CNET's Crave blog, sources for which suggest that the "Galaxy S III" will be more of an incremental upgrade than a revolutionary product -- "like the iPhone 4S was to the 4." The problem with that is Samsung already has plenty of incremental updates to the Galaxy S II. In 4G LTE markets, there's the Galaxy S II LTE (aka Skyrocket), and in Asia, there's the Galaxy S II HD LTE. And then there's the Galaxy Note, which already offers a larger screen in addition to both LTE connectivity and an HD display.

Due in part to the lack of reliable leaked info, consumers' expectations are sky-high for Samsung's next flagship -- comment threads and forum discussions speculate on ridiculous features, like a 2GHz quad-core chip, 2GB of RAM and a 1080p display. With this in mind, it's possible that Samsung's merely trying to manage expectations going into a major product launch -- the old adage "under-promise and over-deliver" applies here.

CNET's source also suggested Samsung may do away with its current naming convention, saying "don't expect it to be called the S3." We'd be surprised if Samsung completely abandoned its Galaxy S branding, though. The manufacturer's sold 20 million Galaxy S II's worldwide, and in its native South Korea, more than 10% of the entire population owns one. With such a popular device, it'd make sense to have a clearly identified successor. In a world of Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touches and HTC EVO 4G LTE's, the "Galaxy S III" name is clear and succinct enough to do just that.

Spec-wise, reports have been circulating for months suggesting a quad-core phone with a 720p display. That's highly likely, but not even remotely surprising. The likes of HTC, LG and Huawei have already set the bar at this level for their 2012 flagships.

So the bottom line is we still have no idea what to expect on May 3. And that makes the event all the more exciting, considering how rare it is to go into a major smartphone announcement knowing absolutely nothing. Whatever form it ends up taking, we'll be on the ground in London on the day to bring you full coverage of Samsung's next flagship.

Shasta Ventures, Founders Fund Put $4.5 Million In The Uber For Carwashes, Cherry

CherryCherry, a recently launched startup that brings on-demand car washes to you and your car, has raised $4.5 million in new funding from Shasta Ventures, Founders Fund, Shervin Pishevar and Bill Lee. Shasta managing partner Tod Francis will join Cherry's Board. The startup previously raised $750,000 in seed funding from a number of ex-PayPal employees including Yammer CEO David Sacks, PayPal founder Max Levchin and Square COO Keith Rabois. In addition to the funding news, Cherry is also expanding to include their service in a total of 10 cities in the Bay Area, and releasing a new iPhone app. Similar to Airbnb, Uber, and GetAround, Cherry is a business that wants to make our lives in the real world better using data, location and mobile technologies.?Via either the web or a native iOS app (Android will be released in a month), users can specify the location of their car on a street (as well as what type of car, color and license plate number) in a parking lot, or another public area. Once you check in with your car?s location on Cherry, the service's technology immediately finds and dispatches a car wash professional to wash your car right where you left it, and you don?t even need to be there.

What patterns do you have in your life that you are concerned about? Maybe you drink too many Diet Coke?s (like me) or maybe you can?t kick drinking pails of coffee. Some of you out there have the inkling that maybe you are drinking alcohol just a little bit too much or too often. Patterns often lead to other patterns. Like when you drink too much maybe you reach for a cigarette or foods that don?t support your training. The edges get blurred and one thing leads to the other. When do patterns become addictions? Don?t be a slave to your patterns ? disrupt them with a different choice. The simplest choices can have the power to completely change your life. Take this absurdly simple choice for example ? from now till Friday don?t drink anything but pure water. The only liquid that goes in your mouth over the next 5 days is water ? full stop, end of story. Simple. For me this simple choice will disrupt my patterns on a massive scale. It?s a detox from all of the chemicals found in Diet Coke, Low Calorie Flavoured Drinks, a clean break from Caffeine ? it cuts out alcohol and almost eliminates all of the other patterns that emerge when you are a slave to your impulses. It?s one simple choice but it has massive power. Give it a go and then see what else you can do to disrupt the other patterns in your life that hold you back.

Music Review: Drunksouls - Revolution - seattlepi.com

Perhaps what makes Revolution, the second album from eclectic French indie reggae rock band Drunksouls so revolutionary, is that its intelligent humor is lost (at least partially, if not completely) on an English-speaking audience. Some of the 16 tracks are in French. It may be chauvinistic on my part to suggest that a French band ought to sing everything in English, but it is difficult if not impossible to get the full effects of humor if you have no idea what the lyrics mean. That said, when the lyrics are in English, it becomes fairly easy to see that this is a band with an almost surreal sense of the absurdities of life. Unfortunately, it just makes the sense that you are missing something valuable because of your linguistic ignorance worse, and you begin to wonder about what you think you do understand.

On the other hand, if you simply let the music flow, this is a band that will have you up and dancing. They have an almost hypnotic sound that contrasts with the edgier lyrical content, even when the English-only handicapped can understand them. Take a song like "Human Race." The lyric talks about looming darkness and the vacuum of life, but the music is absolutely bouncy and joyful. In a sense, the conflict between the music and the lyric defines the conflict in the voice of the song. The blatantly un-erotic sexuality of "Lust" is another example of the same kind of contrast, although here the beat is less joyful and more insistent. Just to call a song that has a kind of sentimental pop hook "Happy Death Day" suggests the kind of ironic sensibility that defines the album.

Songs like "Africa," "Revolution" and "The End" suggest that the band has a socially conscious political agenda as well. "Africa" begins with the joyful sounds of children playing and laughing and launches into an Afropop anthem with very dark overtones, despite its infectious rhythms. "Revolution," on the other hand, has an almost otherworldly opening that gives way to a kind of punk rant. "The End" opens with a dark jazzy vibe that emphasizes the lyric's darkness before merging into something with an almost spiritual quality.

In over an hour's worth of music there really isn't a bad track on this album. The fact that it bothers me that I can't understand the lyrics of songs like "J'ai Fait Un R?ve," "L'amour Di?t?tique" and even the seemingly English-friendly titled "Sullivan Story," is testament to how good the music is. If the music wasn't so captivating, I more than likely wouldn't care what those French lyrics really meant.

Ashley Greene Talks 'Apparition' -- Plus An Exclusive Photo!

'Twilight' star tells MTV News about being on the other side of a haunting: 'I had to take on a lot more loss, betrayal and vulnerability.'
By Fallon Prinzivalli

This is an exciting year for actress Ashley Greene. She just shot a pilot for ABC called "Americana," which revolves around legendary fashion designer Robert Soulter. Greene plays Alice — coincidentally the same name as her "Twilight Saga" character — who joins Soulter's business. Her film "Butter," following a small town and their butter-carving contests, will be released in October.

Plus, she stars alongside Miley Cyrus in "LOL," a remake of the 2008 French comedy — not to mention the highly anticipated final "Twilight" installment, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," in which she'll reprise her role of Alice Cullen for the final time.

Before Greene dons the cropped locks and golden contacts, she'll fight for her life to escape a supernatural presence alongside Sebastian Stan in this summer's thrilling horror flick "The Apparition."

For Summer Movie Preview Week, MTV News spoke with Greene about being haunted as opposed to haunting, the injuries she sustained on set and the scene she's most looking forward to in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."

MTV News: What's it like to be on the other side of the haunting in "The Apparition," as opposed to playing the vampire?

Ashley Greene: I didn't think of it like that, but you're right! [My character] Kelly is very ... human. Death is knocking at her door, and she is fighting for her survival. It was a different experience than playing an — almost — indestructible character like Alice Cullen. I had to take on a lot more loss, betrayal and vulnerability when playing Kelly.

MTV News: You worked with "Harry Potter" star Tom Felton in this movie, and you've both been in huge film franchises. Do you guys talk about your experiences?

Greene: Tom's a really great, grounded guy. We did trade some stories about our experiences, out of mutual curiosity. He feels similar to the way I do: blessed, grateful and utterly in awe of our fans.

MTV News: How was the vibe on set? Did you joke around with the other actors, or was it more serious because of the content?

Greene: There were moments of both. We did have dance parties every Friday in the makeup trailer and made the most of our weekends, but there are times and days where it's a little difficult to disconnect from the character and darker scenarios.

MTV News: Did you have to do any stunts?

Greene: The stunts on this were much different then something like "Twilight." No wires, but lots of scenes requiring agility. I think I injured myself more on this film because of the intensity of the scenes. You get wrapped up and don't realize how hard you're pounding your hand or that you've hurt your ankle until the end of the scene.

MTV News: Is there CGI work involved with the spirit?

Greene: Yes, there is amazing CGI work in the film. I don't want to give too much away, but I will say the visuals are very compelling. Also, it's important to note that this film is a supernatural thriller that really keeps you guessing. The fear is built through suspense and fear of the unknown, rather than the blood or gore of a horror film.

MTV News: Have you ever felt like you had a supernatural experience?

Greene: Supposedly, my building in L.A. is haunted. One time, my dogs woke me up, barking, and my front door was open. I had set my alarm before I went to sleep that night, and it hadn't gone off. That was scary.

MTV News: How did you psych yourself up for filming those scarier and more thrilling scenes?

Greene: I just try to make the situation as real as possible. I put myself in my character's shoes and experience what she's experiencing as she's experiencing it.

MTV News: What scene are you most excited to see in "Breaking Dawn - Part 2"?

Greene: I'm excited to see the final battle scene with the Volturi. Everything has worked up to that big moment. It's action-packed, and I don't think the fans will be disappointed!

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "The Avengers," Robert Pattinson's "Bel Ami," Kristen Stewart's "Snow White," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and more!

Ivy Bridge-packing HP EliteBook gets reviewed, scores well in early tests

Image

Hear that? That, friends, is the sound of someone in Intel's PR department banging his head against a desk. Though we've read more than a few rumors about the company's forthcoming Ivy Bridge chips, Intel has yet to fully detail the new platform, and has controlled the flow of information so tightly that laptop makers won't even use the words Ivy Bridge when talking about upcoming systems. (It's always "next-generation Intel Core processors," but we digress.) So it's a pleasant surprise, then, to see a review of an Ivy Bridge system before Intel even makes its official announcement. Laptop Reviews has apparently been testing a yet-to-be-announced HP EliteBook 8470p with an unspecified Core i7 processor, integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics, 8GB of RAM and an Intel 320 solid-state drive.

Though the testing team doesn't have much to say about battery life, the raw performance scores are quite impressive, surpassing those belonging to heavy hitters like the HP Envy 17 and Lenovo ThinkPad W520 workstation. Then again, Laptop Reviews is quick to admit that that SSD may have helped boost scores beyond what you'd see in an Ivy Bridge system with a good old-fashioned hard drive. On the graphics side, too, the spankin' new HD 4000 provides a nice (read: several-thousand-point) boost over systems running HD 3000, though we'll have to wait a little longer for real-world gaming tests, it seems. That's the abridged version, but we encourage you to hit up the source link for some more detailed remarks, along with comparisons to other systems.

REDray 4K cinema laser projector and player eyes-on (video)

Image

There's no better way to control the visual experience from shoot to show than to create the camera and the projector. That's likely the thinking behind the REDray, the 4K laser cinema projector making an appearance at the company's NAB booth today. The device supports 2D and passive 3D (up to 120fps in 3D mode), with 4K projection for each eye and has a rated laser life of over 25,000 hours. While the device itself is likely to be hidden behind glass in an elevated projector room, the REDray has the same industrial look and feel of its Scarlet and Epic capturing counterparts, with a solid matte metal construction, heavy duty bolts and dedicated access panels for the lens filter, the laser phase adjustment oscillator and the angular refraction aberration indexer. There's also a T1.8 50mm lens mounted up front, sufficiently completing the beautifully monstrous package. Also on display was the tablet-controlled REDray Player, which includes four HDMI 1.4 video outputs with 7.1-channel audio output, the ability to move 4K video to the internal hard drive and an SD reader for ingesting content. You'll also find dual gigabit Ethernet ports, along with USB and eSATA connectors.

The projector experience is much less about the hardware than it is the projections themselves, which certainly did a justice here -- especially considering the imaging device's mid-development status. During a screening of the 3D short Loom, which was shot with the RED Epic, images looked fantastic with accurate color and excellent dynamic range, allowing us to see every detail in a contrasty dark scene, where we were able to make out a very dimly lit female actress. The projection was incredibly sharp on the 24-inch foot screen, despite the film being displayed with 2K for each eye, rather than the maximum 4K. There will be two versions of the REDray projector, including a home theater flavor that supports screens up to 15 feet in size that'll ring in at under $10,000, and a professional model with support for larger venues. RED CEO Jim Jannard confirmed that the home-bound version will ship sometime this year, though he was unable to provide a more precise ship date. We weren't permitted to record video during the screening -- which is for the best, considering that there's really no way to do this thing justice -- but you can still flip through the gallery below for an early look at REDray.

Android Central weekly photo contest: Shapes and texture

coins

There's all sorts of interesting things to see around us, and shape or texture can make for a great photo. With the right light, and a steady hand even the most mundane things, like a bag of coins, can be made into a really cool photo. Sometimes, it's the technique and photographer that makes it all work and not the subject.

Let's explore that this week. Poke around your house, office, or wherever and see what you can find that makes for a great photo opportunity. You'd be surprised what great pictures can come from subjects you'd normally scoff at. Yes, we're going to bump it up a notch and judge on the technique and photographic quality. I can't wait to see your entries.

If winning a contest from the best Android blog on the planet isn't enough incentive, this week we're giving away a pair of MOTOROKR S305 Bluetooth headphones so you can crank up the tunes without the wires. They are one of the best rated items at ShopAndroid, with good reason. Just follow the simple rules:

  • Use an Android device to take a picture. Any Android device
  • Submit the picture in the forum thread we have set up for this week, so everyone can see your handiwork. E-mail was swamping us, and not everyone got to see all the entries. This way, we get to see them all. We like seeing it all.
  • Only submit one. We're going to check, and we'll know if you try to game the system.
  • Be sure to tell what device you used, and any effects or filters used on the photo. We can learn from these as well as have fun.
  • Get your picture in by Friday midnight (your local time). We'll pick the winner and the runners-up and throw them on the blog Sunday afternoon.

Good luck!
