Hurricane Season Brings Reminder to Prepare for Emergencies ...

You are here: Home / News / Local News / Hurricane Season Brings Reminder to Prepare for Emergencies, Consider Flood Insurance

HARRISBURG ? With the Atlantic hurricane season now under way, the?Pennsylvania?Emergency Management Agency reminds residents to always be prepared for the possibility of severe weather.

?Last year, the remnants of Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee brought historic flooding and destruction to the state,? said PEMA Director?Glenn M. Cannon, who noted that two unusually early tropical storms formed during May. ?Everyone should take advantage of this ?calm before the storm? to prepare for severe weather.?

Families should prepare for two scenarios in the event of severe weather: to remain in their homes during the duration of a storm, or to evacuate if it is recommended or ordered by local authorities.

Residents should always have enough provisions in their homes to last at least 72 hours because help from emergency responders may not be immediately available when severe weather strikes.

Other disaster preparedness supplies to have at the ready include:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries;
  • Portable, battery-operated radio and extra batteries;
  • First aid kit and manual;
  • Emergency food and water;
  • Non-electric can opener;
  • Essential medicines/prescriptions;
  • Cash, credit cards and important legal documents; and
  • Sturdy shoes.

If residents are ordered by local officials to evacuate, they should do so without hesitating and should take important documents with them, including:

  • Checkbooks;
  • Driver?s license;
  • Credit card information;
  • Birth certificates;
  • Social Security cards; and
  • Other forms and documents proving ownership/identity.

?Planning what you and your family would do and how you would communicate before and during an emergency makes sense because ultimately, it could save the lives of those you love,? Cannon said.

For more information on how to make a disaster supply kit and how to prepare for all kinds of emergencies, visit?www.readypa.org?or call 1-888-9-READYPA (1-888-973-2397).

Cannon noted that the beginning of hurricane season is a good time to review insurance policies for adequate coverage on property. PEMA encourages Pennsylvanians to consider buying flood insurance policies for homes, businesses and municipal property that can be insured.

Early preparation is important because flood insurance policies generally require 30 days before taking effect.

Unlike wind damage, damage caused by rising water is not covered by homeowners or business insurance policies. Flood insurance coverage must be purchased separately. Most insurance companies and licensed insurance agents handle flood insurance policies.

For more information about flood insurance, visit?www.floodsmart.gov

To protect your property with a flood insurance policy, call your insurance agent or call 1-800-427-2419 to find an agent near you.

Suggestions Regarding Where to Place Indoor and Outdoor ...

Home should be a sanctuary, and it should have all the luxuries you want and need, to live a fulfilled life. Now, if this means buying outdoor fountains on sale, then so be it. They are great investments anyways. See, aside from increasing your home?s resale value, they could actually be used to enhance one?s luck (as the Chinese would have it). And when placed indoors, they can improve the air quality, as well as add a touch of elegance to the surroundings. They come in a variety of designs, and are made of different materials, so you can always expect that something will fit your existing interiors or exteriors. And on top of that, there are actually some distributors today, who offer customized wall fountain creations. Hence, for a few thousand dollars, you would be able to get the look, color, water work and measurement you desire.

Of course, when you think about placing a wall or stand fountain inside your home, you?d want it to be in a place where it makes the most impact.

If you have yet to play around with ideas, here are a few suggestions you should consider in line with that concern.

As far as Feng Shui is concerned, it is recommended that when you buy wall fountains, place them either on the east, southeast, or north portion of the house. This would ensure that it?s suggested effects would be translated into the homeowner?s health, career, life and family. It is discouraged for any water bearing vessel to be situated in the south area, as it is a Fire territory. Representative of fame and reputation, introduction of the water element to an area where fire reigns, may provoke a conflict of energy and the disruption of its flow. It is also forbidden to place indoor water fountains in the bedroom, regardless of whether it is in the designated area, as it is believed to introduce worry into the marriage. But, it is okay for you to position water fountains near the front door, so that it can attract good luck and positive energy.

However, practically speaking, you?d want to put the wall and hanging fountains you buy somewhere that has minimal traffic. You do not want it to be damaged by people coming and going, as well as constantly collect dust and other pollutants. Yes, it would be nice for them to be seen. But they could also be knocked over accidentally by a child or someone who is in a hurry. A secret garden would be the perfect place for outdoor fountains on sale. And inside the home, the back foyer, downstairs corridors or lounge area would be ideal. Just avoid those rooms that are directly exposed to the sun and have gadgets and ornaments that are not supposed to be in humid areas. If you have a collection of antique wooden furniture or paintings in the lounge, take out the fountain or rearrange.

Now, if you are to buy wall fountains here, see to it that you are prepared to commit to its maintenance. This type of d?cor does not groom itself, and will require constant supervision in order to uphold its beautiful and stylish look.

Dismay in Egypt over Mubarak trial verdict

Egyptians anti-Mubarak protesters raise their hands during a rally in Cairo's Tahrir square on Sunday.

By Ayman Mohyeldin , NBC News correspondent

?
News Analysis?

CAIRO ? The rise and fall of Egypt?s former President Hosni Mubarak has been a watershed moment for victim?s families, a country in transition and autocratic rulers across the Middle East.

The announcement Saturday of Mubarak?s conviction and sentence to life in prison for failing to stop the killings of some 900 protesters during last year?s uprising initially triggered a sense of euphoria and vindication for many outside the courtroom.?

But the acquittal of his two sons (one-time heir apparent, Gamal, and wealthy businessman, Alaa) on corruption charges, as well as the acquittal of six senior security officials on charges of ordering the killings, angered many. Mubarak was also acquitted on other corruption related charges.

The entire Mubarak trial, dubbed by many here as the ?trial of the century,? had several shortcomings that, in the eyes of activists, lawyers and human rights advocates raise questions about the intentions of the ruling military council and the competence and independence of Egypt?s general prosecutor and the judiciary.

A fair investigation and trial??
Mubarak?s investigation, arrest and subsequent trial were the result of public street protests that forced the military to bring Mubarak to justice in order to defuse mounting public anger. Mubarak appeared in court nearly six months after he stepped down from power. Had street protests not erupted, questions remain as to whether he would have ever been brought to justice under the watch of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the group of 20 senior officers in the Egyptian military currently ruling the country, all of who were appointed by Mubarak himself.

With anger growing in Egypt over the ?Mubarak verdict, protestors returned to Tahrir Square to demand justice for those who died in Egypt's revolution. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Tahrir Square occupied as anger grows over Mubarak verdict

Egypt?s general prosecutor is one of many officials who was appointed by Mubarak and yet remains in power today. He and his team were responsible for bringing the charges and the case against the former president. Even by the prosecutor?s own admission, the case against Mubarak was thin because key pieces of evidence were destroyed or deleted ? including recordings from police command rooms.

In addition, as pointed out by legal experts in Egypt, in order for the prosecution to collect evidence, it had to ask the criminal investigators at the Ministry of Interior to gather it. Hence one of the fundamental problems in the trial: in order to investigate the six senior security officials from the Interior Ministry who were on trial for killing protestors, all men who at some point ran various police and security agencies of the state, the general prosecutor had to turn to their subordinates and the institutions they ran to find evidence against their former bosses. No wonder key evidence disappeared.

Aside from the collection of evidence, victim?s families and their lawyers have cast doubt on the integrity of the trial. After initially being broadcast to the public, the judge ordered the trial to take place behind closed doors.?

The testimony of key witnesses who served under Mubarak, like that of the current de-facto ruler of the country Field Marshall Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces Sami Annan and the former head of intelligence Omar Suliman, were in secret. ?The court never officially made those testimonies public.

Another point that has raised eyebrows is that in acquitting Mubarak and his sons on corruption charges, the judge said that the alleged crimes occurred beyond the statute of limitations. Bur how did such a statute of limitations evade the attention of the team of lawyers and the general prosecutor? That oversight has also raised suspicions about the competence of prosecutors.

The Mubarak verdict has triggered public outcry and reignited the deep seated mistrust activists and protestors have in the country?s transition led by the military. Sixteen months after Egypt?s revolution, one central question remains unanswered: Who killed the demonstrators? The general prosecutor?s inability to successfully try cases against the police has only added to the public perception that the state?s institutions are not genuine in pursuing justice.

Even Al Ahram, Egypt?s leading state-owned newspaper, splashed the headline ?Anger Sweeps Egypt, No Retribution for Martyrs.?

In Cairo, cheers and fears over Mubarak sentencing

A protester sits on a tree branch as he waves Egypt's national flag during a demonstration in Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt, Sunday.

Presidential politics?
With Egypt?s presidential field now narrowed down to just two candidates, Mohammed?Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq who will compete in a run-off election on June 16 and 17 ? both have been quick to tap into the public outcry over the Mubarak verdict for political gain.

Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, described the ruling as a shock. Morsi has promised, if elected, to form a team of forensic, judicial and investigative experts to compile all the evidence and retry the former president and his entire regime for crimes committed throughout his 30-year rule, not just the narrowly defined period of the revolution. ?

The other run-off candidate, Ahmed Shafiq, who served for years under Mubarak, including as Egypt?s prime minister during the uprising, said Egyptians should respect the verdict. He said that it will serve as a reminder to Egypt?s future rulers that they cannot govern without accountability. ??

Failure of justice
However, the perception among most Egyptians was that the judiciary was not immune to manipulation.

Immediately after the verdict was read, lawyers representing the victim?s families began chanting in the courtroom ?the people want the purification of the judiciary? and ?invalid.??Their immediate assessment was that the verdict failed to deliver justice.?

As one prominent activist said in television interview ?Mubarak?s historic trial was investigated by regime culprits and judged by remnants of the regime.?

While Mubarak and co.?s verdict was widely considered lenient and an injustice to victims, in the court of public of opinion, the greatest travesty has so far proven to be confidence in the Egyptian legal system.?

The trial is now being cited as one more example of Egypt?s botched transition to democracy.

Garden Tyrant: Home away from Home....Mature garden at our 1734 ...

?Gardening is the most relaxing hobby I have.? Watching our families garden mature over time has been gratifying to me and my parents. We don't even have to go to a nursery anymore, since we have enough perennials that can be divided.? I also like to see our plants reseed themselves in the garden like Phlox and Black Eyed Susan.? In the Spring, Pansies and Johnny Jump Ups grow in the cracks of the bricks, and stone pathways in the court yard.? Wild Ferns and Moss also grow under the cool wet shade of the Boxwood hedges. Hens and Chicks profusely multiply in this Ironstone English sink.? The sink was a find at Brimfield.Antique Show.

The urns were purchased at Brimfield.? We change the urns through the seasons for color and interest.? Christmas time we add an Alberta Spruce with small white lights.? Spring and Summer we like bold colors that intertwine and hang over the edge.? When Fall time comes, we place Mums. We like to buy hanging baskets that are already planted.? It's cheaper and? makes clean up easy. The urns can also be used for more exotic plants such as Palm trees or Orchids.? Tropic plants in the urns can add a whole new level to even a country garden.??

The Irises blooming were bought from White Flower Farm in Litchfield, Connecticut about 15 years ago.? When Irises get over crowded, they need to be divided.? I like to divide and replant in the Fall.? The rhizomes should be exposed slightly above ground? to winter over.? This plant will be here forever as long as its probably maintained.?

The Frank Lloyd Wright inspired planter was a find at Brimfield.? The Granite bench was given to my parents, by a nice couple who live across the street.?

The hanging basket will soon be planted with Impatiences and hanging on the front door.
?

This garden below was a shade garden which was anchored by a 100 year old Horse Chestnut tree.? The tree was taken down in September 2012.? The timing was crucial because The Blizzard that hit in October 2012 would have caused the tree to split, and hit the house.???

The garden planted is still a top notch shade garden with over 100 Hostas.? Many are special because of their super size or mouse ears size.? A few have a light fragrant bloom or just a single white bloom like a Lily.? Others, were bought because of the shape of the leafs and color combos, such as aqua blue green with a splash of lime green.? The visual is rich with color and texture.? We have one of the best Hosta collections around. ? I will probably need to transplant these shade loving plants to the other side of the property, since these plants are in full sun.? Other plants that compliment the Hostas include Ginger, Cultivated Ferns, Evening Primrose, Tobacco (annual) and? Astilbies.

The color of the bench is a historic teal blue color bought at The Seraph in Sturbridge, Mass.? The color stands out against weather beaten shingles of the house and arbor. The climbing rose is a called New Dawn and will bloom after posting.? I'm sorry to miss this display.? The day Lilies, Coral Belles, Black Eyed Susan, Phlox, Lavender, and rambling English Boxwood look full. ?? ?The brick edge was inspired from Martha Stewart's house in Westport, CT years and years ago, Turkey Hill.? She had a rose garden with a brick edge.? My mother and I hauled 100's of bricks that surrounded the pool in the back yard to the front court yard garden.? I then removed 8' long Carpenter ant infested rail? road ties from the garden edges and replaced them with bricks.? The flower beds looked natural? with soft curves instead of sharp angles.? The brick color contrasted with the stone compliment each other without overpowering the garden.? It looks like it has been here for a 100 years.? Every winter the ground will heave, and I have to reline the bricks and add more stone.?

This garden is so nice to sit in during the early morning. ? The sun warms this part of the property first.? I like to sit with a cup of coffee and watch the birds that come to the feeders.? Peaceful.... ??

?I stood on part of the roof to get this shot of the courtyard.? This garden is sheltered by the house.? The courtyard garden is a nice surprise when you walk up granite steps from the driveway.? Its an unexpected garden.? Friends and family will sit on the classic bench and drink their coffee.? There are lots of bird that visit the birdbath and feeders.? The birds visit in the morning around 8 am and then in the early evening 5 ish.?? ??

This is our street garden.? We have so many plants in this garden I even forget.? It gets overgrown quickly.? Despite our digging, dividing and pulling this fertile ground keeps growing and growing.? I recently made space for a tree Peony.? It will do well in this spot but one Hosta plant can grow a mound as big as a 5 foot round kitchen table.? I will have to do some dividing.? We have Bleeding Hearts,? Lilies, Poppies, Hens and Chicks, Pansies, Golden rod, Phlox,? false snap dragon, Irises, carnations, lavender, Columbine,? Black Cohosh, wild Geranium,? Aster,? Boxwood, Alberta Spruce and many un named plants I need to learn.
The front of the house looks pristine for an old jewel.? This old cape, farm house has seen many families come and go.? This house has never had a garden like this surrounding all its sides and nooks.? This house would of had a couple of trees to offer shade, high grass and maybe a stand of Lilacs? like any old New England home would have.? The owner back in the 1700's might of had a small kitchen garden with some herbs out of necessity.? If he or she saw this house today with all these plants they would hardly recognize the house.? They wouldn't understand why? the purpose?? Its a romantic notion to have a garden.? What do you think??

The side garden was a barren dusty area.? The only thing that grew was some hard core Spiriea.? The soil was enriched with buckets of rotted manure, peat moss and mulch.? Now, we have Hellabores, Blue Salvia, Day Lilies, Golden Basket, Black Eyed Susan, Ornamental Boxwood, Volcano Phlox's, and thistle to name a few.? This has been a learning experience of trial and error.? We transformed a barren area to a
lush perennial bed.? We like perennials because they can be divided and planted else where.? Perennials come back yearly for several years.? Its okay to add an annual here or there, but buying? perennials is the way to go. ?

The Koi pond garden has gone through some changes.? My mother has added a mass of cat nip.? It will bloom spires of vibrant purple blue and make a big statement.?? After it has bloomed, my mom will cut it back for round two of blooms. The plants she picked are robust bloomers and arranged in clusters of 2 to 4 plants for max impact. There are Hostas, Grasses and Ferns for foliage interest. The swamp Irises are going to send up a mass of tall purple beackons anyday now. Then an area of Phlox will explode with color.? In the Fall a mass group of Sedium will pop with a rich color of reddish orange attracting last minute Bumble bees and Hummingbirds. THE garden shed is finally covered with Boston Ivy and Climbing Hydrangea.? The Rhody looks beautiful with its pink blooms.? The Weeping Hemlock has been transformed.? During a garden tour my mother was told how to trim this variety of Hemlock.? I think it looks terrific.? I like the use of the Olive jar and bird baths for focal points in our garden. THE garden whimsy was made by my father.? I really love this place.? Someday my parents will move and this garden will hopefully live on.?

Demolition Inc. escapes the Tegrazone and is available for non-Tegra devices

Demolition Inc.

Demolition Inc. is somewhat of a favorite of mine at the moment. Its blend of excellent graphics, simple addictive gameplay, and most importantly, blowing things up, makes for a fantastic mobile game. The only downer for many was it's reliance on a Tegra processor, meaning only a select few could enjoy it. Not so anymore, as the developers, Zeroscale Games, have released a version in the Google Play Store that is fully optimized for non-Tegra devices. Originally we'd heard it was due on April 26, but this is definitely a case of better late than never.

The blowing things up aspect of the game is made ever better by a truly impressive physics engine. The developers say that nothing is pre-determined, and nothing is pre-animated. The actions taken by the player truly determine the chain of events.

There is a kind of story behind all the destruction though. You play as Mike an alien demolition worker, who flies a UFO all over Earth causing destruction and havoc wherever he goes. Using various different 'tools' such as oil slicks, super glue, and even exploding cows, Mike guides the traffic into doing his bidding and causing the series of high-rise buildings to collapse.

It's a great game, and can only be helped by now becoming available to a wider audience. Demolition Inc. HD is available now for a price of $1.99/£1.59. The THD Tegra optimized version is available at the same price. You'll also find the trailer for the game after the break.

A New Science Kit Lets Teens Watch Neurons as They Fire

When I was a graduate student in neuroscience at the University of Michigan, we would record the brains of animals and try to figure out what the brains were doing. At the same time, we were going into classrooms and teaching neuroscience to kids. Tim Marzullo?now my business partner?and I noticed that there was a big difference between what we were doing in the lab and what was being taught. They were using Ping-Pong balls and jump ropes to explain action potentials [electrical activity that occurs when neurons fire], but that?s so far removed from what is really going on in the brain.

We came up with an idea to build a recording kit for $100. The SpikerBox is a bioamplifier. What?s happening is that axons have electricity, and the electricity gets picked up by the pins on the machine. You?re listening to what the brain is doing. In our example, we use cockroaches, but we?d like to get things going on vertebrates and sea animals in the future.

Although our assembled kit costs $100, if you build it yourself, the parts are $49. A lot of high schools have an engineering or a physics class where the students build the kit and then use it in that course or hand it off to another class, say, biology or physiology.

We wanted to do this because kids who could become the best neuroscientists in the world might never become neuroscientists because neuroscience is not taught in high school. They might teach about the nervous system or the brain, but it?s very general. When you choose a career, you don?t choose things you read about in books; you choose based on the experiences you have. Seeing that cockroach leg dance to music and being able to manipulate the leg and hear the spikes that come out of it are really compelling. Those are events in children?s lives.
