16 Tips for Getting Hired in Health Care Management | Minnesota ...

There is no magic potion or secret code to uncover the answer to the age-old question, ?How do I get hired??? To be honest, getting hired in any industry involves a lot of hard work.

Kellie Colberg, Employment Coordinator for Accurate Home Care

Kellie Colberg, Employment Coordinator at Accurate Home Care, understands the commitment involved in getting hired and has compiled the following 16 tips to help you grab a career in the health care management sector?or any industry, really.

  1. Have health care experience or a passion for health care that you can show, or talk about why you?re interested in this field and what you can bring to the company.
  2. Have a resume that showcases your strengths first?whether that is career, educational or volunteering.
  3. Include a cover letter tailored to the company you?re applying to.
  4. Know about the company you are applying to work for; check out the website.
  5. Come with questions to the interview about the company and don?t ask all the questions to the first person you interview with?save some for others to ensure you ask everyone a different question.
  6. Follow-up on your application with an email or a phone call, but don?t be obsessive about this. Call/email to ensure they received your application, and then ask when you can expect a follow-up action.
  7. Be flexible and realistic; you may not get your dream job/hours coming right out of college.
  8. Use your resources; network with friends and your school. Accurate Home Care posts job openings with Globe/MSB all of the time. Networking can seem overrated, but you honestly never know who will know someone that has an opportunity for you.
  9. Always present yourself as you want people to perceive you. First impressions are critical and you only get one first impression.
  10. Show up at the interview being yourself because if you do get the job and show up with a ?different? side to your personality, the employer will start questioning what else you have that will be a surprise.
  11. Don?t just take a job to get one. Be sure you are going to work somewhere because you want to be there for a long time. Employers don?t want to spend the time and resources bringing someone on just to have them leave. An exception to this would be a temp job.
  12. Don?t go in talking about how you want to advance in a short amount of time. This is a turn off as the employer is trying to fill a certain position and they don?t want to think about having to refill it before it?s filled.
  13. If you?re interested in a company, apply, even if there aren?t open positions. You never know what is not posted and/or what they might have coming up.
  14. Send a handwritten thank you note to anyone you have interviewed with and follow-up with the appropriate people you were told to after the interview.
  15. Provide references that will give you honest and good referrals. Make sure you alert your references that an employer may be calling.
  16. Don?t give up! Looking for a career can be time consuming and frustrating, but the right opportunity will come if you have the patience and commitment to finding it!

Well apart from the fact he died when I was eighteen and left us in a financial mess, he was a very non-participatory father no doubt partly because he was physically frail, especially in his later years, maybe also to some degree because of the culture in which he grew up (he was born in the 1890s). Because of his age in part he demanded my mother's full-time attention which of course meant my sister and I were neglected (not helped by the fact my parents went to live in another country to us for the last nine years of my father's life).

He was in consequence a very remote figure in my life, only ever gave me one piece of advice (which was bad), left me to grow up pretty much on my own from the age of ten (sent to live with relatives). I made some big mistakes as a result

It has left me with a lot of anger (better than it was as I have mellowed with age and the love of my wife)

Inflationary Illusions in Real Estate

Real estate, and the careers that depend upon it, is a boom-bust business in the age of inflation. The illusion of wealth is everywhere..until it is snatched away.

That?s why it?s a great time for David Mamet?s Pulitzer Prize winning ?Glengarry Glen Ross? to make its third appearance on the Broadway stage. It?s a show about Chicago real estate salesmen selling Florida properties through deception and intimidation.

The show appears just as Iowa dirt ascends to new heights, hope springs eternal that home prices have stopped falling, and Bernanke?s tonic is finally putting some sizzle in the home market.

I?m a huge fan of the movie, as those who attended last year?s Vancouver Symposium may have detected. When asked during the Whiskey Bar panel what movie depicted the U.S. economy, I offered up ?Glenngary Glen Ross.?

I was sky high with anticipation taking my seat on 4th row. I was not disappointed. Broadway is indeed magic, especially when you can see the shine on the actor?s shoes and spit flies as they say their lines.

Reviewers are carping that the production is nothing but a vehicle for Al Pacino, who plays deluded has-been Shelly Levine. Maybe, but Bobby Cannavale steals the show as Ricky Roma, the role Al Pacino earned an Oscar nomination for in the 1992 movie version.

Cannavale brings more swagger to the Roma role than even Pacino did. He combs his slick Guido-style hairdo using his sun glasses as a vanity mirror. He looks to have stolen his suit, suspenders, white-collared shirts, and argyle socks from Gordon Gecko?s closet.

The audience was on the edge of their seats ready to react to any utterance or facial expression Pacino would produce. Still, his portrayal of ?The Machine? did not have the Willie Loman desperation that Jack Lemmon brought to the role on the big screen.

John C. McGinley on the other hand makes for an even angrier Dave Moss than the Ed Harris movie version. If there?s a plot to Glenngary, Moss is its protagonist. It is his desperate plan to do something, rather than just being stuck with the deadbeat sales leads, that puts the Premier Properties office in turmoil and sets up the climax.

Real estate investment is an opportunity. We paraphrase that great investment mind Ricky Roma, the alpha male salesman at the top of his game. Investments can teach a man about himself, as Roma waxes philosophical to the lonely James Lingk. It?s the power of suggestion plying the vulnerable.

In real life today, there is no shortage of vulnerable, especially not in Sioux County, Iowa.

On October 25th in Iowa, no spell was needed to entice buyers of fertile Iowa farmland. No condos or McMansions will sit on this land, only corn or soybeans. Auctioneers took turns taking bids as prices climbed for 80 acres in this heart of corn country. When bidding hit $20,000 per acre, reported an observer, ?you could hear a gasp in the room.? Applause broke out when bidding stopped at $21,900.

It?s been awful dry in the midwest, but the land market continues on fire, with prices up over 31 percent in the past five years, according Bloomberg Businessweek. Yep, it?s a no-brainer; income from crops ?and the long-term appreciation of the property,? professor Michael Duffy opines.

In a similar way, the Toronto condo market has defied reason and gravity for years, enticing investment from around the world. One reason is that people like Herbert Crockett believe in the old saw, passed on to him by his father: Invest in things you can touch. So Mr. Crockett took the plunge on a Trump Tower Hotel condo for C$904,000.

The ?Trump? salesforce told Crockett he would rack up between a 5 and 27 percent annual return from his investment in the big-name project. That sure beats the 2.25% regulated rate banks are paying in Crockett?s home in France. ?We bought into the Trump name and what we were being told was a hot real estate market in Toronto for this kind of project,? Crockett told Bloomberg in an interview. ?It turns out that the hotel had nothing to do with him and that it isn?t a good investment after all.?

The Toronto market, with more condos under construction than any other city in the world, is now beginning to soften and Mr. Crockett and others that bought are only renting their units a quarter of the time projected. Instead of receiving a monthly check from his investment, the retired HR director is now losing C$7,000 a month according to his lawsuit.

Although the Donald was featured prominently in Trump Tower sales literature, he and his staff were not involved in the development other than selling his famous name to the project and attending the grand opening. An attorney for Trump said, he ?was not involved in the sales process and Talon, the developer, made no representations to buyers regarding return on investment.?

But while the Trump legal staff paints the picture that he didn?t have anything to do with Toronto?s tallest building, evidently EVP and daughter Ivanka didn?t get the memo. ?We look forward to continuing to achieve great success at Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto,? she told Bloomberg in an email. ?Our team is dedicated to providing world-class service and amenities only found in a Trump Hotel Collection property.?

Great success? Well, yeah. ?The hotel is an unbelievable success,? Trump attorney Alan Garten says. Hey, occupancy might not be great. Investors might be losing money. But, the Canadian Automobile Association has awarded the hotel restaurant?s a four diamond rating and TripAdvisor.com rates the Trump Hotel tops in Toronto.

Mr. Crockett has hired lawyers to fix his mistake. In his court filing, Crockett contends he is ?the victim of an investment scheme and conspiracy based upon reckless and negligent misrepresentations.?

With the Toronto boom turning into a bust, the advice of Mr. Crockett?s late father is not so sage. It turns out he?s an investing neophyte. ?These are not sophisticated investors,? said Javad Heydary, who heads the law firm that is suing the developer and Trump for Crockett and 20 other investors. But the developer?s head man says this is all just a case of ?buyer?s remorse? and the plaintiffs just want to get out of their deals.

What were dreams and opportunities in a boom, become in the bust the fraudulent schemes of court filings. The charming and helpful salesmen are suddenly liars and crooks. ?There?s the illusion of movement in the Toronto housing sector with sales and buyers,? Crockett told Bloomberg, ?But now it seems more like a Ponzi scheme.?

Central bankers can print money and for a while, in some markets of some things, create the illusion of wealth and prosperity. There will always be salesmen around to facilitate the transaction ? Glengarry style. But neither the Fed nor the salesmen can stop the busts, the ruined lives, and hard feelings. The money printing and money manipulations ? all taking place on a epic scale ? only creates more.

Sincerely,
Doug French

Photolisting Inquiries - Adoption.com Forums

We inquired about nearly 7 children/sibling sets. Some it took over a month before I got a response. The set we were placed with, we heard back within 30 minutes of the inquiry.

We met the kids about 6 weeks later. We met the foster mom when we went out to visit the kids. We also met the kids' teachers.

We disrupted the adoption with the boy in the sibling set due to extreme behaviors (and no, we weren't told about them).

We have had our STBAD for 12 months, and they are hoping to finalize before March...

David Haye believes Vitali?s era is over ? Boxing News

British heavyweight boxer David Haye believes WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko no longer is the best in the division. Haye, who has been campaigning to fight against Vitali Klitschko since his knockout victory over Dereck Chisora earlier this year, believes it is time for him to grab the title from Vitali.

?I always assumed he was quite a proud man and wanted to leave some sort of legacy behind, which he won?t do at the moment, because, can you think of any big fighters Vitali has fought?? said Haye in his recent interview.

?He?s had 50 fights against nobodies. The only fight of his that people remember is the one against Lennox Lewis ? which he lost,? he added.

?He needs a fight people will actually remember ? and the only recognised heavyweight out there is myself,? he added.

For now, Haye believes it is his time to get a shot at Vitali, to finally get a shot at the title. Haye has been campaigning to fight Vitali Klitschko forever now. He has already faced Vitali?s younger brother Wladimir Klitschko previously and has lost.

Now, Haye believes it is time for him to fight against Vitali to finally grab a title and cement his legacy in the division.

?David Haye, David Price and Tyson Fury are three big men with big digs and big question marks remaining over their durability. Add Dereck Chisora, rumoured to be re-applying for his British license, then pair any two in semi-finals with the victors to meet and determine the 'Don'. All would fill football stadiums,? said Haye?s promoter Frank Promoter in his column this week.

In other words, Haye is near to a title shot, only if he can prove himself. While Haye believes there is nothing left for him to prove in the division, Frank Warren believes he needs to defeat other contenders in order to get the top.

For now, Haye is all ready to get a match against Vitali, believing the Ukrainian fighter stands for nothing. For Haye, Vitali has always fought against inferior opponents which is not an achievement for a titan like him.

Jellyfish experts show increased blooms are a consequence of periodic global fluctuations

Dec. 31, 2012 ? Blooms, or proliferations, of jellyfish can show a substantial, visible impact on coastal populations -- clogged nets for fishermen, stinging waters for tourists, even choked cooling intake pipes for power plants -- and recent media reports have created a perception that the world's oceans are experiencing trending increases in jellyfish. Now, a new multinational collaborative study, involving the University of Southampton, suggests these trends may be overstated, finding that there is no robust evidence for a global increase in jellyfish over the past two centuries.

The results of the study, which includes lead co-author Dr Cathy Lucas, a marine biologist at the University of Southampton, appear in the latest issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The key finding of the study shows global jellyfish populations undergo concurrent fluctuations with successive decadal periods of rise and fall, including a rising phase in the 1990s and early 2000s that has contributed to the current perception of a global increase in jellyfish abundance. The previous period of high jellyfish numbers during the 1970s went unnoticed due to limited research on jellyfish at the time, less awareness of global-scale problems and a lower capacity for information sharing (e.g. no Internet).

While there has been no increase over the long-term, the authors detected a hint of a slight increase in jellyfish since 1970, although this trend was countered by the observation that there was no difference in the proportion of increasing vs. decreasing jellyfish populations over time.

Dr Cathy Lucas, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, says: "Sustained monitoring is now required over the next decade to shed light with statistical confidence whether the weak increasing linear trend in jellyfish populations after 1970 is an actual shift in the baseline or part of a larger oscillation."

To date, media and scientific opinion for the current perception of a global increase in jellyfish was evidenced by a few local and regional case studies. Although there are areas where jellyfish have increased; the situation with the Giant Jellyfish in Japan and parts of the Mediterranean are classic examples, there are also areas where jellyfish numbers have remained stable, fluctuated over decadal periods, or actually decreased over time.

Increased speculation and discrepancies about current and future jellyfish blooms by the media and in climate and science reports formed the motivation for the study. "There are major consequences for getting the answer correct for tourism, fisheries and management decisions as they relate to climate change and changing ocean environments," says Dr Lucas. "The important aspect about our work is that we have provided the long-term baseline backed with all data available to science, which will enable scientists to build on and eventually repeat these analyses in a decade or two from now to determine whether there has been a real increase in jellyfish."

"The realisation that jellyfish synchronously rise and fall around the world should now lead researchers to search for the long-term natural and climate drivers of jellyfish populations, in addition to begin monitoring jellyfish in open ocean and Southern Hemisphere regions that are underrepresented in our analyses," says lead author Dr Rob Condon, marine scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) in Alabama.

Given the potential damage posed by jellyfish blooms to fisheries, tourism and other human industries, the findings of the group foretell recurrent phases of rise and fall in jellyfish populations that society should be prepared to face.

Opposed to same-sex marriage, company ends wedding business

An Annapolis, Md., company whose old-fashioned trolleys are iconic in the city's wedding scene has abandoned the nuptial industry rather than serve same-sex couples.

The owner of Discover Annapolis Tours said he decided to walk away from $50,000 in annual revenue instead of compromising his Christian convictions when same-sex marriages become legal in Maryland in less than a week. And he has urged prospective clients to lobby state lawmakers for a religious exemption for wedding vendors.

While many wedding businesses across the country have embraced the chance to serve same-sex couples, others have struggled to balance religious beliefs against business interests.

Wedding vendors elsewhere who refused to accommodate same-sex couples have faced discrimination lawsuits ? and lost. Legal experts said Discover Annapolis Tours sidesteps legal trouble by avoiding all weddings.

?If they're providing services to the public, they can't discriminate who they provide their services to,? said Glendora Hughes, general counsel for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights. The commission enforces public accommodation laws that prohibit businesses from discriminating on the basis of race, sexual orientation and other characteristics.

The trolley company's decision offers a snapshot of a local business navigating a new landscape in the wedding industry, and leaving it behind for a competitor to swoop in.

The head of the Maryland Wedding Professionals Association said the trolley company is the second vendor to refuse business over the state's same-sex marriage law, which voters upheld in November. The Maryland clergyman who led opposition to same-sex marriage called the trolley company's choice to abandon profits on principle ?gutsy? and predicted that more businesses would follow suit.

?That's a bold and noble statement,? said Derek McCoy, executive director of the Maryland Marriage Alliance. ?The other option would have been just to become a legal case.?

Frank Schubert, a political strategist who ran campaigns against same-sex marriage in Maryland and three other states this year, said opponents predicted collateral damage.

?This is exactly what happens,? Schubert said, adding that religious liberty is ?right in the cross hairs of this debate. The law doesn't protect people of faith. It simply doesn't.?

Schubert pointed to a handful of other examples publicized in news reports across the country of wedding vendors sued for refusing to accommodate a same-sex ceremony: a pair of Vermont innkeepers, a New Jersey church group and a New Mexico wedding photographer.

In Maryland, the gay-rights group Equality Maryland said the trolley company's decision appears to be an isolated case of a business owner exercising his rights.

?As long as he doesn't discriminate against other people, he's free to do whatever he wants to do, including withdrawing his business from the industry,? executive director Carrie Evans said.

Discover Annapolis Tours owner Matt Grubbs declined repeated requests to discuss the move, beyond acknowledging its economic impact to his business, which also operates historic tours.
