5 Extreme Sports You Didn't Know Existed

August 26th, 2012.

Today we have a list of 5 awkward extreme sports you may didn't know existed. What's more, not all of them are considered sports and rather present dangerous recreational activities. Let's roll...

Volcano surfing

Volcano surfing aka ash boarding aka volcano boarding is a weird sport in which riders hike up the erupted volcano and slide down, sitting or standing on a thin Plywood or metal board. What makes this sport extreme is the fact that you can fall off and get cut by the rough volcanic ash. Protective gear, like jump suits and goggles are used for those reasons.

Limbo skating

In limbo skating or roller limbo a person drives on roller skates underneath an obstacle with a very low height like a horizontal pole without touching it. In order to do so, athletes spread their legs apart as much as they can and lean their upper body forward, with the face almost touching the ground. As with traditional limbo dance, several athletes may participate in a competition in which a pole is lowered from round to round. Whoever touches the pole is out, until only one winner remains. A variation of this sport is when athletes are skating under as many cars as possible.

Powerbocking

Powerbocking is jumping and running with elastic-like spring-loaded stilts. It's considered an extreme sport, though some folks think of it as a form of exercise. The stilts themselves are often referred to generically as "bocks" or "powerbocks," or by their brand name. Each boot consists of a foot-plate with snowboard type bindings, rubber foot pad (aka hoof), and a fibreglass leaf spring. Using only their weight, and few movements, an athlete is able to jump 3-5 ft (1-1.5 metres) off the ground and run up to 20 mph (32 km/h)... Jumping stilts are best known from the closing ceremony of the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.

Underwater hockey

Underwater hockey aka Octopush is a non-contact sport in which two teams of up to ten players (with six players on each team in play at once) compete to maneuver a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into goals. Games consist of two halves, typically 10-15 minutes long and a short half-time interval. At half time the two teams switch ends. Players wear a diving mask, snorkel and swimfins, and carry a short stick for playing the puck.

Zorbing

Zorbing, which is also known as globe-riding or sphereing, involves rolling downhill in an orb, usually made of transparent plastic. This sport is generally performed on a gentle slope, but can also be done on a level surface, permitting more rider control. There are two types of orbs, harnessed and non-harnessed, with the latter being able to carry up to 3 riders. Double-harness spheres have different slope requirements, and must only be operated in specific locations...

Militants from Afghanistan attack Pakistan

(AP) ? Dozens of militants from Afghanistan attacked an anti-Taliban militia post in northwest Pakistan for the third day Sunday, sparking fighting that killed one soldier and 20 militants, a Pakistani official said.

In addition to the dead, four soldiers and four militiamen were wounded in Sunday's attack in the Bajur tribal area, said Jahangir Azam Wazir, a local government administrator.

Pakistan has criticized Afghan and U.S.-led coalition forces for not doing enough to stop the rising number of cross-border attacks by Pakistani Taliban militants holed up in the Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nuristan, across the border from Bajur.

That criticism could soften after the coalition killed a senior Pakistan Taliban commander in an airstrike in Kunar on Friday. Mullah Dadullah, was the leader of the Pakistani Taliban in Bajur. He was killed along with 11 others, including his deputy.

Four soldiers, six militiamen and 38 militants died during the cross-border attacks in the Salarzai area of Bajur on Friday and Saturday, Wazir said.

The airstrike that killed Dadullah followed the cross-border attack on Friday, but the NATO coalition said there was no coordination with Pakistan during the attack.

The U.S. and Afghan governments have long criticized Pakistan for failing to prevent militants using sanctuaries inside the country from attacking targets inside Afghanistan. The main focus has been on Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, the main militant sanctuary in the country and home to the Haqqani network, considered one of the most dangerous insurgent groups fighting in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency said Sunday that its operatives have confirmed that the son of the founder of the Haqqani network was killed in Pakistan, even as the Taliban vowed that he was alive and in Afghanistan.

Shafiquallh Tahriri, the spokesman for Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security, said Badruddin Haqqani was killed in an airstrike in Pakistan last week. He did not provide further details, and he would not say on what information the agency's operatives were basing their conclusion or whether they had seen the body.

Tahriri's account is similar to one provided Saturday by a senior Taliban leader who said Haqqani was killed in a drone strike. It also is close to a version provided by Pakistani officials who said they were 90 percent sure the militant commander was killed Tuesday in a missile strike in North Waziristan.

The U.S. said recently it expects Pakistan to launch an operation soon against the Pakistani Taliban in North Waziristan. But analysts doubt they will target the Haqqani network and other militants fighting in Afghanistan because they are not seen as much of a threat to Pakistan. Islamabad also has historical ties with the Haqqani network, and many analysts believe it is seen as an important potential ally in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw.

Pakistani military officials have said privately that they plan to increase the pressure against militants in North Waziristan slowly, not conduct a sweeping offensive as they have done in the other parts of the tribal region.

Hundreds of tribal elders, religious leaders and militants held a meeting in North Waziristan on Saturday and called on Pakistan not to launch a military operation, one of the participants said Sunday.

The group cited a nonaggression pact it says the army has with the most powerful local militant leader in the North Waziristan tribal area, Hafiz Gul Bahadur, said Malik Nasrullah Khan, a tribal elder who attended the meeting. Commanders loyal to Bahadur were present at the meeting in Eidak town, he said.

Like the Haqqani network, authorities see Bahadur as less of a threat because he has focused attacks in Afghanistan, not Pakistan. The military has never officially acknowledged having a nonaggression pact with him.

PUNTO FIJO, Venezuela (AP) ? After nightfall on Friday, as red lights began glowing atop the massive Amuay refinery in western Venezuela, the odor of sulfur made its way through the surrounding neighborhood of working-class homes and small shops.

Francisco Gonzalez, a stocky accountant with dark hair, noticed the smell after 7 p.m. as he climbed the stairs to his second-story apartment across the street from the refinery. He had smelled the fumes from gas leaks many times before, so he didn't think much about it as he shut the door.

Six hours later, disaster struck. A powerful explosion ripped through the neighborhood and engulfed part of the refinery in flames, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 80 in Venezuela's deadliest refinery blast ever.

"The first thing I saw was that the apartment didn't have windows or doors or walls, just a floor and a roof," Gonzalez said. "I don't know how we survived."

In the dark, the 31-year-old man made his way downstairs to the street, where he, his brother and sister-in-law joined terrified neighbors. Some were wounded. Others were shouting.

When Gonzalez looked at the back of his right hand, it was bleeding from gashes.

At about 2 a.m., the halls of the hospital were filling up with wounded people. Doctors and nurses hurried to treat the most seriously hurt, while Gonzalez and others sat on the floor waiting their turn.

Back at the refinery, soldiers, firefighters and state oil company workers were diving into action. Bodies were pulled from the rubble and lifted onto pickup trucks.

Stella Lugo, the governor of Falcon state, went on state television to update the nation, setting the initial toll at seven people dead and 48 injured. The toll steadily rose in the next hours.

When she reached the refinery at dawn, Lugo posted a photo on Twitter showing balls of fire and black smoke billowing.

Other government officials went on television saying the gas leak had led to the blast and that the fire was being brought under control. President Hugo Chavez ordered an investigation and declared three days of mourning in the country.

A total of 209 homes and 11 businesses were damaged in the explosion, and a National Guard post next to the refinery was destroyed, Vice President Elias Jaua said on Saturday. He said 18 of the victims were National Guard soldiers.

On Saturday night, dozens of people who had fled their homes in the neighborhood of La Pastora returned to streets covered with rubble, twisted scraps of metal and puddles of spilled fuel.

Gabriela Nunez, a housewife, went back to her home to gather belongings, saying she was worried about looters who had stolen goods from nearby stores hours after the explosion.

"That forced us to come back, even though we're afraid, to save what can be saved and secure our houses," Nunez said.

More than a day after the blast, the flames were still raging on Sunday, sending up a column of dark smoke.

Some oil experts and government critics were also raising questions, saying they believe there hasn't been sufficient maintenance at refineries and that the situation could be making such incidents more likely.

Refinery manager Jesus Luongo denied that, as did Chavez, who spoke to journalists near the refinery on Sunday.

The president said investigators haven't determined what caused the disaster.

"Lack of maintenance? Who can, who can say that right now with any seriousness? Nobody," Chavez said. He said he had spoken personally with some of the military officers who were on duty at the time.

"They tell me that very night, in the rounds that were made a few hours earlier, no substantial leak was detected," said Chavez, who later visited the refinery complex and attended a Mass for the victims.

Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the country has enough fuel in storage, "10 days of inventories," to keep the Venezuelan market fully supplied. He said fires were still burning in two fuel storage tanks but that other "process areas" of the refinery were otherwise unaffected.

Once the flames are completely extinguished, Ramirez said, "we have the ability to restart our refinery in two days."

Restarting will be a challenge for Gonzalez, who picked through what remained of his family's apartment, sweeping away debris with a broom. Broken glass littered the floor along with fragments of the shattered walls.

The shop on the first floor was also destroyed, but Gonzalez and his brother and sister-in-law all survived with only minor injuries.

"I'm happy to be here telling this story," Gonzalez said, his hand covered in a bandage and with stitches on his arms. "Material things, although they cost us a great deal to obtain, aren't worth much when you compare them with life."

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

You love your gadgets because they're awesome. Or maybe you love them because you spent $500 and decided you'd better learn to like them. Whatever the case, chances are you've learned to forgive their flaws and enjoy them enough as they are, force-quits and all. That about describes this week's IRL, in which three Engadget editors make peace with their imperfect gadgets: an occasionally crash-prone Transformer Prime, the easily scratched V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones and Verbatim's Dual USB Power Pack, with its short little charging cables.

How To Make The Best Commercial Real Estate Decisions | Real ...

Are you ready to enter into the commercial property market? You may have many questions about it, but there is no need to worry because this article has helpful information for you. The following paragraphs are your springboard to commercial real estate profits.

When dealing in commercial real estate, it is important to stay patient and calm. Do not go into an investment out of haste. You might regret it if you are not satisfied with your real estate goals. It could take some months, possibly a year, for your dream investment to appear in the market.

You can post to social networking sites, and you should also send out newsletters about your commercial properties. Keep your online presence updated and active, as it will often be a good source of referrals, connections and updates from important sources.

You need to do this so that all terms match the pro forma, and also the rent roll. If you end up finding a term which isn't covered by the rent roll, you'll end up changing the pro forma.

Before you buy or sell a commercial property, find out several key economic indicators for the region, including trends in unemployment and income, as well as major employers in the region. Properties near hospitals, universities or other centers of large numbers of employees tend to sell faster and at higher-than-average values.

In a commercial loan, the borrower must order the appraisal. The bank won't let you use one not ordered by you. Order the appraisal yourself to avoid a headache.

Unlike a home loan, you will need a higher percentage down payment for a commercial real estate loan. The most commonsense way to obtain commercial financing is by checking out different lending agencies and by asking around regarding the best types of investments.

Hire a qualified commercial real estate attorney to avoid legal problems later. It is good to have the best lawyer possible in your corner to protect your name in case of problems in your real estate dealings.

When you are buying commercial real estate, find some opportunities that will let you buy a bigger building. The rationale for going bigger is that in reality it does not require much extra effort to manage a property with more units, and at a lower cost per unit you could maximize your profits in the long run.

The relationship you forge with private lenders and investors when purchasing commercial property is tremendously important. Often, commercial real estate is sold before ever being listed as being for sale. The only way you might find out about it is through the network of people you have carefully developed over time. Private lenders and investors are often in the know and can be key to informing you of a potentially good deal.

Now you are better informed about commercial real estate. If you were comfortable in your level of knowledge before, you should be practically bursting with confidence now! These tips should give you a firm foundation from which to spring into a successful commercial real estate career.

Movie Review: Premium Rush Indulges Our Need, Our Need For ...

Location

Wide Release

Dates

Opens Aug. 24

Premium Rush begs you to surrender yourself to the pure joy of kinetic energy: hurtling on a bicycle between cars, through red lights, headed the wrong way down one-way streets. ?Brakes are death,? proclaims the daredevil New York City bike messenger Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who might genuinely believe that if he stands still for long he?ll cease to exist.

The camera follows him through even the tightest spaces, and you can?t help but feel the anxiety of what would happen if suddenly a taxi door were to open or a pedestrian were to step into the street. Yet there?s no option other than to keep moving, and it?s a thrill.

With its dead-simple plot, compressed timeline, use of flashbacks to reveal a story that starts in the middle rather than at the beginning, and its urgent celebration of movement, director David Koepp?s film reminds me of Tom Tykwer?s great Run Lola Run (even if Premium Rush didn?t leave me buzzing with quite that much pleasure).

Never mind the somewhat ridiculous storyline, in which a corrupt cop (Michael Shannon), in debt to the Chinese underworld, tries to steal a message that Wilee has been entrusted to deliver. Never mind that the film cheats in its use of time, pretending that an unbelievable number of events can occur between 6:33 and 7 p.m. All else is forgotten once Wilee jumps on his bike.

We?re then in the world of which he is a master, calculating routes across the city and whizzing any which way he can. The film?s best device takes us into Wilee?s mind as he makes what must be split-second decisions about how to cross dangerously busy intersections. We?re shown each of his options, in slow motion, as he considers them, and we?re cheered when he finds the counterintuitive path that will lead to safety.

He?s part of a fraternity of bike messengers, a group portrayed as the most hated people in New York because of the dangerous tactics they employ to make their deliveries on time. We?re supposed to respect Wilee more than most of them because he?s a Columbia Law School graduate who rides for the love of it, not because he lacks other options for making a living. His girlfriend Vanessa (Dania Ramirez) also rides, but getting a cushy office job someday sounds perfect to her.

It?s the chase scenes that make this a movie worth seeing. Michael Shannon?s unhinged cop (no actor does unhinged better) zigs and zags his car through the streets to catch Wilee even as a patrol officer on a bike also gives pursuit. Later, Wilee has to race rival messenger Manny (Wol? Parks) while that same bike cop is again after him. And those are just the two showcase sequences ? Koepp likes to keep his actors and his camera moving throughout.

At the end of the spry 91 minutes, I wanted to sprint out of the theater, and I mean that in the best possible way.

Teaching children journalism to strengthen democracy and ...

By WhyDev.org

Much of the world expects journalists to hold the government to account through their reporting. In Bangladesh, media repression and lack of resources hamper the ability to report effectively on challenges facing Bangladeshis. As Jessica Carter describes, in one Bangladeshi neighbourhood, children are being taught the skills to tell their stories to share with a society that often does not hear them.
