Boost for land speed record bid after successful rocket test

LONDON | Wed Oct 3, 2012 11:46am EDT

LONDON

(Reuters) - The British team behind a project to build a 1,000 mph car have cleared a key hurdle with a successful test of the rocket they hope will push the vehicle well beyond the sound barrier.

The rocket will be twinned with a fighter jet engine from a Eurofighter Typhoon on the Bloodhound supersonic car in a bid to smash the existing world land speed record of 763 mph set 15 years ago by the same team in Thrust SSC.

The test-firing, which produced a jet of flame from the rocket fixed to a test rig in a bomb-proof military hangar at an airport in the southwest English town of Newquay, lasted a matter of seconds.

"That's exactly what I was hoping to see," said Andy Green, the Royal Air Force fighter pilot who will sit in the driving seat for the record bid. "That was a hugely successful, very, very important experiment for us."

The test brought together three components; the rocket itself, a tank containing the peroxide-based rocket fuel and a Cosworth Formula One engine used purely to pump the fuel into the combustion chamber.

Test data showed the rocket produced 14,200 pounds of thrust with the Cosworth engine running at over 16,000 revolutions per minute. Further tests through the end of this year and into 2013 will ramp up the power.

For the record bid, the rocket is designed to generate 27,500 pounds of thrust, equivalent to 80,000 horsepower or the combined output of 95 Formula One cars.

The team say they have enough funding from sponsors to complete the car, which so far only exists on paper.

Bloodhound will attack 1,000 mph on a dry lake bed called Hakskeen Pan in South Africa's Northern Cape region in 2014.

Bosnian Serb Entity and Serbia To Build Bridges :: Balkan Insight

Elvira M. Jukic

The governments of Serbia and Republika Srpska, one of the two of Bosnia's entities, agreed on several projects in the fields of energy, transport, construction and economy, on Tuesday in Banja Luka.

One of the agreed initiatives is to build three bridges over the river Drina, which forms the eastern Bosnian border with Serbia and runs mainly through Republika Srpska. Another initiative was to establish regular flights between Banja Luka and Belgrade.

The two governments agreed they would cooperate in building the system of pipelines for the South Stream which Republika Srpska signed for last week and that they would also work on projects for using the hydro-potential of Drina.

?By projects we mean building four hydro power plants worth between 700 and 800 million euros,? said Aleksandar Dzombic, Prime Minister of Republika Srpska.

Serbia's Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said that cooperation with Republika Srpska is of the most important strategic interest for his country.

?Our cooperation must be operational and concrete. Our task now, as Prime Ministers, is to ensure the implementation of our conclusions,? Dacic said.

Dacic added that the special relationship between Serbia and Republika Srpska is understandable and should be boosted.

?I do not know how anyone in the world can be against regional cooperation,? Dacic said.

During the meeting it was also agreed that several municipalities from both sides of Drina should link to each other and do projects of reconstruction together; the issue of double citizenship was discussed as well.

The authorities of Republika Srpska, led by Milorad Dodik, the President of the entity and the leader of the ruling Alliance of Independent Social Democrat, SNSD, is politically closer to Belgrade than Sarajevo with Dodik himself recently saying Belgrade is the capital city to him.

Bosnia's Republika Srpska and the neighbouring Serbia signed the Agreement on Special Parallel Relations six years ago which defined the economic cooperation but has also a political significance.

RS's Prime Minister Dzombic said that the joint sessions will be held every six months so that the cooperation is more efficient.

Retirement Planning ? 3 Key Questions - BCWS Blog

?

If you're between the ages of 55 and 65, you've probably spent at least a little time dreaming about life after work. But before you turn off the computer and turn in your retirement paperwork, consider three important questions.

?

1. ?What will you do in retirement? If you love golf, and dream of getting up late and hitting the greens every afternoon, retirement may be just the ticket. But your hobby may not hold the same appeal after a few years. That's why it's important to take stock of your interests, hobbies, and activities before retiring. Consider "field testing" activities you intend to pursue in retirement, such as joining a band, volunteering for a nonprofit organization, or taking classes at a community college. Doing "retirement activities" before you retire can be an eye-opening experience, and may help to separate daydreams from reality.
Studies show that the number of older Americans either holding jobs or looking for work has been rising for at least 15 years. Of course, some folks seek employment out of necessity: bills need to get paid. But for many people, work also provides needed social interaction and a sense of satisfaction. Consequently, some may decide to work at least part-time during retirement ? whether or not they need the money. Another idea that's gaining popularity is called "serial employment." With this strategy, you spend part of your "retirement" years employed in a series of full-time jobs interspersed with periods of travel and leisure. Such a plan can generate a healthy supplemental income for you and benefits for talent-starved employers.
3.? Have you saved enough?
This is the million-dollar question.
How much money you'll need to comfortably retire depends on many factors, including the status of your mortgage and other loans, your general health, expected rates of return on your investments, the size of your current nest egg, life expectancy, plans during retirement (including travel), pensions and other sources of income, the cost of health care and insurance, and myriad other considerations.

One size doesn't fit all. So it's important to confer with a trusted advisor who'll help you take a hard look at the numbers - before you wave goodbye to your employer. Your trusted team at BCWS is here to help provide guidance in your retirement planning.

Why is the suicide rate higher then the Vietnam veteran after they came home?

http://www.va.gov/health/NewsFeatures/20120910a.asp?
Friends, Families and Communities Committed to Preventing Veteran Suicides

This is Suicide Prevention Month, time to remind America about the crisis too many of our wounded warriors face. At VA, every month is Suicide Prevention Month and we encourage you to join us in getting involved. VA and numerous other government and private organizations are joining together to participate in Suicide Prevention Month activities.
You can help make more people aware of this crisis by distributing posters and flyers in your community. Or put a banner or badge on your website. Download them here. http://www.veteranscrisisline.net/Resources/SpreadTheWord.aspx

What We?re Doing
VA?s Veterans Crisis Line connects Veterans in crisis, and their families and friends, with qualified, caring responders through a confidential toll-free hotline and online chat.
Veterans and their loved ones can call 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1 or chat online to receive confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
According to Jan Kemp, VA?s Suicide Prevention Center Director, ?The caring professionals at the Veterans Crisis Line are specially trained and experienced in helping Veterans of all ages and circumstances. Many of the responders are Veterans and understand what Veterans and their families and friends have been through and the challenges Veterans of all ages and service eras face.?
Call them and tell them about anything that has been particularly stressful for you lately ? the death of a loved one, relationship break-up, loss of job or unemployment, money problems, losing your home, or anything else that might be contributing to how you are feeling.
Since its launch in 2007, the Veterans Crisis Line has answered more than 650,000 calls and made more than 23,000 life-saving rescues. In 2009, the Veterans Crisis Line added an anonymous online chat service, which has helped more than 65,000 people.
Help at Every VA Medical Center
People who know a Veteran best may be the first to recognize emotional distress and reach out for support when issues reach a crisis point ? well before a Veteran is at risk of suicide.
To make sure all Veterans and their loved ones are aware of the Veterans Crisis Line, VA is coordinating with communities and partners nationwide to let Veterans and their loved ones know that support is available whenever, if ever, they need it.
There is a Suicide Prevention Coordinator at every VA Medical Center. This month they are working with community supporters to coordinate special outreach events including seminars, health fairs, training and information sessions, community events and events at many VA Medical Centers.
Here is more information on suicide prevention and other mental health issues.
It is not unusual to face disappointments, frustrations, loss, and the wear and tear of daily stress. People experience emotional and mental health crises in response to a wide range of situations ? from difficulties in their personal relationships to the loss of a job.
For Veterans, these crises can be heightened by their experiences during military service. When emotional issues reach a crisis point, it?s time to call on the Veterans Crisis Line for support.
Recognize the Signs
Sometimes a crisis may involve thoughts of suicide.
Learn to recognize these warning signs:
Hopelessness, feeling like there?s no way out Anxiety, agitation, sleeplessness, or mood swings Feeling like there is no reason to live Rage or anger Engaging in risky activities without thinking Increasing alcohol or drug abuse Withdrawing from family and friends
The following signs require immediate attention: Thinking about hurting or killing yourself Looking for ways to kill yourself Talking about death, dying, or suicide Self-destructive behavior such as drug abuse, weapons, etc.
If you are a Veteran or know a Veteran who is experiencing any of these signs, call the Veterans Crisis Line immediately. Responders are standing by to help. Anonymous On-Line Quiz That Will Help
Crisis, stress, depression, and other issues affect people in different ways. Maybe you?re having trouble sleeping or feel out of control. Maybe your energy level is down or you feel anxious all the time. If these issues and others seem to be leading to a crisis, treatment can help.
On the Crisis Line website you can take a confidential, anonymous, risk assessment to see how you might benefit from VA or community-based services.
You don?t have to give your name. You just answer some questions that may be very familiar. Such as:
During the last 4 weeks, how often have you been bothered by any of the following? Feeling nervous or worrying a lot? Having arguments or fights? Feeling out of control? Director Kemp stresses that, ?Suicide is one of the top priorities in VA right now. Prevention goes beyond a month, or a week, or a day. With VA, prevention is constant and we do that by making sure Vets and their families are aware of the signs and symptoms and that they know where to go for help when they need it.? ?Call the crisis line. It?s the first step you can take to get the help you need to get your life back on track. People are here to help you.?

Chamber launches voter mobilization effort

(AP) ? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has spent tens of millions of dollars on television ads to help boost Republican congressional candidates, launched an extensive effort on Monday to mobilize voters.

The pro-business lobbying group unveiled VoteForJobs2012.com, a website designed to educate voters and get them to the polls. The site will include voter registration forms, absentee ballots and polling place locators. It also will include information on House and Senate races and a comparison of the candidates on the issues.

"We are working harder than ever to make sure voters in every state, district and precinct know which candidates have a record of fighting for pro-growth policies that will revitalize our economy and put Americans back to work," said Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the Chamber, in a statement.

The website is part of the Chamber's effort to get out the vote and comes in addition to its wave of television advertising.

The Chamber has spent more than $19 million on ads this election cycle, much of it targeting Democratic candidates. It is expected to spend millions more in the next five weeks before Election Day. It recently bought $2 million in ads in Florida to challenge Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and $390,000 in North Dakota to air spots against Heidi Heitkamp. The Chamber also invested about $3 million in California for commercials going after eight Democrats in House races.

Among the Chamber's top Democratic targets are Nelson, Virginia's Tim Kaine, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown and Montana Sen. Jon Tester. The Chamber also spent more than $800,000 in Maine on ads criticizing independent candidate Angus King, who is locked in a three-way race to replace Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe. If elected, King is likely to caucus with the Democrats.

Things you should know about bad credit loans - Financial News ...

Bad credit situations are common these days. Many people have been affected by the global economic crisis making getting a loan difficult. Banks are much stricter about lending so many seek to obtain bad credit loans. You might be desperate, but before you act it is important to get some facts about bad credit loans. Here are some things you should be aware of before you borrow.

High Interest Rates

Institutions that offer bad credit loans often charge high interest rates sometimes even over 100%. It is important to read and understand all the terms and conditions on a bad credit loan before you borrow. If you don?t think you can make the payments you are better off looking for help somewhere else.

Scam artists

There are many fake loan institutions out there looking to take advantage of people. They appear very legitimate, but they are just waiting to steal your money from you. Avoid any lender that asks for a ?security deposit? or ?processing payment? or any other type of up front payment before you get the loan. They will quite simply take your money, and you will never hear from them again.

Other options

There are ways to get a loan though even if you have bad credit. For example:

You borrow against the value of your home or the equity you have paid towards your mortgage. Remember that if you can?t pay the loan the bank takes over ownership of your house.

These are organizations similar to banks but the owners are members of the credit union. All the members work in the same industry or live in the same geographic area. Credit unions are more flexible in their lending criteria as compared to banks.

It doesn?t hurt to ask a family member or friend for a loan. Write up an official contract agreeable to both parties. If you do it right you will both feel more comfortable.

Ask someone to co-sign on a bank loan with you. You are much more likely to get approved for a bank loan if someone with good credit is willing to sign the loan contract with you.

These are online sites that connect individual lenders with borrowers. Check out sites like www.prosper.com. The interest rates here are usually reasonable, but you have to sell yourself and transmit confidence to the lender.

Get a job

Your chances of being approved for a loan are much higher if you can show that you are employed. This applies to all types of bad credit loans. Unemployment makes lenders nervous and less likely to approve you for a loan.

Many people suffering from bad credit are in complicated situations, but there are options. If you present yourself as informed and prepared to make payments you are more likely to get approved for a bad credit loan.

Dance Dance Revolution makes a difference in kids' physical activity levels

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? A study published in Pediatrics October 1 by researchers at the University of Montreal offers positive news for Wii-loving teenagers and their parents: games such as Wii Sports and Dance Dance Revolution can bring them closer to recommended physical activity levels. The study is the first of its kind. "Teenage exergamers -- people who play video games that require physical activity -- are most likely females who are stressed about their weight. On average, they play two 50 minute sessions per week," said study author Jennifer O'Loughlin of the university's Department of Social and Preventative Medicine.

"As less than 15% of children and adolescents currently participate regularly in physical activity, we are pleased to report that exergaming can add to regular physical activity to attain physical activity guidelines" Current guidelines recommend that youth engage in 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity most days of the week.

The study looked at the family background and videogame habits of 1,209 Montrealers aged between 14 and 19. Teenagers and their parents completed surveys that covered subjects such as household income, drug use, body weight and education, enabling the researchers to ensure that their portrait of gamers was not influenced by a particular socio-economic profile. The questionnaire also covered what games were played, where, for how long, with whom, and with what intensity. Wii Sports (68% of exergamers), Dance Dance Revolution (40%), Wii Fit Yoga (34%), and Boxing (Punchout; 15%) were the most popular exergames played at home. WiiSports (26%) and Dance Dance Revolution (29%) were played most frequently at friends' homes.

Less than 1% of exergamers reported exergaming at school. The researchers underscored that although previous studies have shown that boys are more likely to play videogames in general than girls, girls are more likely to play exergames. "Girls might be uncomfortable exercising at school because they feel judged and these games could be providing an alternative," O'Loughlin said, noting that the games are particularly popular amongst youth of both genders who are concerned about their size. "On the other hand, there could be something about the kind of social interaction that exergaming provides that appeals to them."

Exergaming could provide an avenue for addressing the serious obesity epidemic and O'Loughlin hopes that the practice will increase. "Factors such as competitions, new consoles, multiplayer modes, and contact with other players via the Internet could improve participation," she said. "Additionally, the feasibility of exergaming in community centres or at school should be tested." Noting that other studies have shown that boredom and other factors eventually may diminish the amount of exergame activity, O'Loughlin added that more research is needed to understand how to increase and support this kind of physical activity.

This study received funding from the Canadian Cancer Society (grant 15689) and the Institut national de sant? publique du Qu?bec.
