The BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome says the prosecution argued that the scientists were "just too reassuring"
Six Italian scientists and an ex-government official have been sentenced to six years in prison over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila.
A regional court found them guilty of multiple manslaughter.
Prosecutors said the defendants gave a falsely reassuring statement before the quake, while the defence maintained there was no way to predict major quakes.
The 6.3 magnitude quake devastated the city and killed 309 people.
Many smaller tremors had rattled the area in the months before the quake that destroyed much of the historic centre.
It took Judge Marco Billi slightly more than four hours to reach the verdict in the trial, which had begun in September 2011.
Lawyers have said that they will appeal against the sentence. As convictions are not definitive until after at least one level of appeal in Italy, it is unlikely any of the defendants will immediately face prison.
'Alarming' caseThe seven - all members of the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks - were accused of having provided "inexact, incomplete and contradictory" information about the danger of the tremors felt ahead of 6 April 2009 quake, Italian media report.
Continue reading the main storyThe Apennines, the belt of mountains that runs down through the centre of Italy, is riddled with faults, and the "Eagle" city of L'Aquila has been hammered time and time again by earthquakes. Its glorious old buildings have had to be patched up and re-built on numerous occasions.
Sadly, the issue is not "if" but "when" the next tremor will occur in L'Aquila. But it is simply not possible to be precise about the timing of future events. Science does not possess that power. The best it can do is talk in terms of risk and of probabilities, the likelihood that an event of a certain magnitude might occur at some point in the future.
The decision to prosecute some of Italy's leading geophysicists drew condemnation from around the world. The scholarly bodies said it had been beyond anyone to predict exactly what would happen in L'Aquila on 6 April 2009.
But the authorities who pursued the seven defendants stressed that the case was never about the power of prediction - it was about what was interpreted to be an inadequate characterisation of the risks; of being misleadingly reassuring about the dangers that faced their city.
Nonetheless, the verdicts will come as a shock to all researchers in Italy whose expertise lies in the field of assessing natural hazards. Their pronouncements will be scrutinised as never before, and their fear will be that they too could find themselves embroiled in legal action over statements that are inherently uncertain.
In addition to their sentences, all have been barred from ever holding public office again, La Repubblica reports.
In the closing statement, the prosecution quoted one of its witnesses, whose father died in the earthquake.
It described how Guido Fioravanti had called his mother at about 11pm on the night of the earthquake - straight after the first tremor.
"I remember the fear in her voice. On other occasions they would have fled but that night, with my father, they repeated to themselves what the risk commission had said. And they stayed."
'Hasty sentence'The judge also ordered the defendants to pay court costs and damages.
Reacting to the verdict against him, Bernardo De Bernardinis said: "I believe myself to be innocent before God and men."
"My life from tomorrow will change," the former vice-president of the Civil Protection Agency's technical department said, according to La Repubblica.
"But, if I am judged by all stages of the judicial process to be guilty, I will accept my responsibility."
Another, Enzo Boschi, described himself as "dejected" and "desperate" after the verdict was read.
"I thought I would have been acquitted. I still don't understand what I was convicted of."
One of the lawyers for the defence, Marcello Petrelli, described the sentences as "hasty" and "incomprehensible".
'Inherently unpredictable'The case has alarmed many in the scientific community, who feel science itself has been put on trial.
Continue reading the main storySome scientists have warned that the case might set a damaging precedent, deterring experts from sharing their knowledge with the public for fear of being targeted in lawsuits, the BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome reports.
Among those convicted were some of Italy's most prominent and internationally respected seismologists and geological experts.
Earlier, more than 5,000 scientists signed an open letter to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in support of the group in the dock.
After the verdict was announced, David Rothery, of the UK's Open University, said earthquakes were "inherently unpredictable".
"The best estimate at the time was that the low-level seismicity was not likely to herald a bigger quake, but there are no certainties in this game," he said.
Malcolm Sperrin, director of medical physics at the UK's Royal Berkshire Hospital said that the sentence was surprising and could set a worrying precedent.
"If the scientific community is to be penalised for making predictions that turn out to be incorrect, or for not accurately predicting an event that subsequently occurs, then scientific endeavour will be restricted to certainties only and the benefits that are associated with findings from medicine to physics will be stalled."

I walk over the skulls and the hot sand in the desert. I hold my shield and wonder "How did I get here"? That's a question i've had for a day, since that's how long iv'e been here. Last thing I remember is being in New York City fighting the Red Skull, when the black mist appeared. That was all I remembered until now. The black mists were aliens, none i've seen before. Then, I think is everyone missing,Is the whole Avengers team missing? Or was it just me and the other person fighting Red Skull with me,Spiderman. I see a group of men walking with camels. I then think "I am in Egypt"?

It's about time. The HTC DLX has most often been rumored carrying a Verizon-style 6435LVW or Droid Incredible X name, and yet it was unveiled first in Japan as the J Butterfly; we really needed the photos just now surfacing at Android Central to remind us that the 5-inch, 1080p gigantophone could still come to Big Red. While nothing's confirmed yet, the black-with-red-trim design and all too prominent Verizon labeling make a convincing case for the DLX's ultimate US destination. A helpfully provided phone profile screen might be more interesting to some, as it hints that we might get the same quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB of RAM and 8-megapixel rear camera as in the J Butterfly -- Verizon won't pull a Droid Incredible 4G LTE and tone down the hardware, if this is true. Without any more details, we're still left wondering just how soon Verizon could commit to launching the smartphone. There's no guarantees that Verizon will follow KDDI's schedule and ship in early December.
Update: We've been wondering whether the odd name was meant to be short for Droid Incredible X, i.e. "DIX" instead of "DLX," but our friend @evleaks on Twitter just showed us a list of device PIDs that mentions the latter. @evleaks also suggests that DLX might be short for the codename "Deluxe" for the international variant, just as "ENRC2" was short for "Endeavor C2" (One X+).
Update 2: It turns out the J Butterfly has the codename "Deluxe J" in its bootloader menu, so there you have it. Thanks again, @evleaks!

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's budget deficit turned out to be smaller than feared in the first six months of the current tax year, giving the government hope it can meet this year's deficit-cutting target.
Friday's data reduces the chance that Chancellor George Osborne will need to announce extra spending cuts or tax rises in a half-yearly budget statement on December 5 to ensure borrowing in the current tax year falls in line with March's budget forecast.
However, the government may still have to announce cuts for future years if it is to meet another goal, that of putting debt as a share of national income on a downward path by 2015.
The Office for National Statistics said public borrowing in the first six months of the tax year was 2.6 billion pounds higher than the same period a year ago at 65.1 billion pounds, once certain one-off factors were stripped out.
This compares with a 10.6 billion pound overshoot estimated last month for the first five months of the tax year, and makes it more likely that Osborne will succeed in trimming borrowing for 2012/13 to 120 billion pounds from 122 billion in 2011/12.
"This is much, much better than they would have thought only a month ago," said Brian Hilliard, economist at Societe Generale. "It's still an overshoot compared to the plans but it does make their life a bit easier."
However, Osborne's plan to eliminate Britain's underlying budget deficit remains controversial as his Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition nears the mid-point of its term in office.
Initial plans to achieve eliminate the deficit by 2015 have been pushed back two years as growth has been far weaker than forecast, and at 8.0 percent of GDP last year, Britain's budget deficit was still the largest of any major European country.
The opposition Labour Party says the pace of cuts is self-defeating, arguing that any savings made are outweighed by lower tax revenues caused by slower growth. And trade unions plan a big rally in London on Saturday to protest against austerity.
Nonetheless, Friday's data comes at the end of a rare week of good economic news for the government. Employment is the highest since records began in 1971, inflation is near a three-year low, and economists expect data next week to show an end to Britain's second recession since the 2008 financial crisis.
But the broader economic outlook is still weak, with economists forecasting a 0.3 percent fall in output for 2012 as a whole, and just 1.1 percent growth in 2013.
David Miles, the most dovish member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, said in a newspaper interview on Friday that this weakness still justified a "super-expansionary" stance for monetary policy.
CORPORATION TAX HIT
The improvement in Britain's public borrowing this year was driven by a sharp downward revision to earlier estimates of borrowing between April and August, as well as lower than expected borrowing in September.
The government's preferred measure, public sector net borrowing excluding financial sector interventions, fell to 12.8 billion pounds in September from 13.5 billion pounds a year ago, well below economists' forecasts for an unchanged reading due to lower borrowing by local authorities and public corporations.
The Office for Budget Responsibility, which publishes a new assessment of Osborne's fiscal plans on December 5, said central government spending was growing at a slower pace than forecast. But these benefits were outweighed by very weak growth in tax revenues - largely due to lower corporation tax payments because of disruption to North Sea oil and gas production.
A return to growth should make the budget position easier over the next six months, and economists predict only a small overshoot of 2012/13's 120 billion pound goal, with Barclays seeing a 6 billion overshoot and Capital Economics 7 billion.
But if tax revenues do not pick up, and central government spending accelerates to grow at the planned rate, the overshoot would be nearer 15 billion pounds, the non-partisan Institute for Fiscal Studies said.
Moreover, weak growth makes meeting 2015's target to put debt as a share of GDP on a downward path a challenge. Net debt totalled 1.065 trillion pounds - or 67.9 percent of GDP - in September, up from 63.6 percent of GDP a year earlier.

If you're indecisive about that pricey but hard-to-find new app, Google Play will now be offering another option in its store -- you can put it aside in a wishlist until you make up your mind. That new feature (which was espied in recent teardowns) is hitting devices now on a per-account basis, and if you have it (version 3.9.16) you'll notice a bookmark icon near the top right of the screen when you load up an app page. When you tap that icon, the software will be added to your wishlist, which can be scoped from the menu button with the "My Wishlist" setting, saving you the trouble of searching it out later. Depending on your Android device's settings, you may already have it or were notified of its availability -- if so, happy shopping.

The Dalai Lama didn't curse at a Brown University event, the school swears ? even if closed captioning being shown with a live video stated differently.?
The exiled Tibetan leader was urging listeners Wednesday night to share his thoughts with other people if they found them interesting. If not, he said, they could "forget" it.
But a person transcribing the Dalai Lama's remarks for closed captioning misheard the word "forget" for a profanity, a university spokeswoman said.?
The closed captioning on a large screen at the Rhode Island Convention Center transcribed the remark as "f*** it."
Some in the audience also believed the Dalai Lama, who has a strong accent, had used a profane phrase. Questions have arisen previously over the same comment in other venues.?
The Dalai Lama is interviewed by NBC's Ann Curry during his October 2012 visit to New York. In the interview he discusses the more than 50 Tibetans who have set fire to themselves in search of religious freedom.
The Dalai Lama has been visiting various cities over the last month.
