SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/AP) ? About 50 demonstrators took to the streets of downtown San Francisco during the early evening commute Monday as Bay Area Rapid Transit officials and police sought to prevent further disruptions. Now, BART is considering taking legal action against some of those protesters.

Chanting ?No justice, no peace. Disband the BART police,? protesters marched down Market Street trailed by police officers, but the system?s trains were not interrupted.

There were no arrests in the largely peaceful protests, with demonstrators walking down into BART stations to briefly confront transit police before heading back up to the street to continue their march. The group also walked to the steps of City Hall.

It was the latest demonstration by activists upset about a BART police officer?s fatal shooting of a transient in July and the agency?s decision to shut down its wireless service to stop a protest in August.

The group taking credit for the demonstrations, ?Anonymous,? reportedly plans more protests. And, that has BART considering seeking restraining orders against people arrested at multiple events.

KCBS? Chris Filippi Reports:

BART Considers Legal Action Against Demonstrators

?I can tell you it?s being considered but to what extent and how likely that is, I wouldn?t be able to say,? BART spokesman Jim Allison said. ?I do know that there are individuals who create continuing problems for people at BART, who harass station agents for instance, on a regular basis, that restraining issues have been ordered against them. So it?s not unprecedented.?

Can gelatin be art?

Click to launch the website Food and Wine.

Two years ago, London-based artists Sam Bompas and Harry Parr installed hundreds of quivering, glow-in-the-dark jellies (the British term for anything set with gelatin) at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. The one-night installation, part of the museum's Sensate: Bodies and Design exhibition, was inspired by funerals?because jellies, like bodies, are fleshy but temporal. An audio recording juxtaposed a traditional funeral march with the sound of thousands of jellies wobbling. "The jellies sounded downright rude. Kind of squelchy," Bompas says. Museum-goers were invited to eat the art before it melted: Flavored with sherry, each sculpture doubled as a kind of highbrow Jell-O shot.

In their book, Jellymongers, which is just out in the U.S., Bompas and Parr chronicle art-meets-food events like this one, share their vast jelly knowledge, and offer photographs of cheerfully colored jellies molded into the shapes of buildings like St. Paul's Cathedral and the Taj Mahal. There are also surprisingly doable recipes calling for fresh or bottled fruit juices and, occasionally, liquor. The trickiest part about making them is finding sheets of gelatin. "The powdered kind really is rubbish," Parr says.

Bompas and Parr's idea to create jelly art came about, as many whimsical ideas do, while the friends were drinking at a pub. Bompas, who worked in financial public relations, and Parr, an architecture student, were just looking for a hobby to turn into a quirky side business. "For most people, jelly is disgusting?a base form of kids' food," Bompas says. "We wanted to use proper fresh ingredients."

In their early research, they learned that England was once famous for its jelly?Henry VIII wanted it at his banquets, and there is evidence of French chefs making secret trips across the Channel during Victorian times to steal jelly-making ideas and buy beautiful copper molds. Those elaborate vintage molds, Bompas and Parr discovered, are prohibitively expensive. At first, they used Ikea containers as molds. When they wanted to create more elaborate shapes, they learned to create their own molds using architectural design programs.

To speed up the process, they held a competition in 2008 for architects to design jelly buildings. They received more than 100 entries and hosted a banquet for 2,000 attendees, displaying the individually lit submissions on a table that made them shake. (Wobbliness was a judging criterion.)

Since then, the duo has become known for doing all kinds of fantastical things with food, like filling a room at a gallery with a breathable gin-and-tonic vapor and creating a four-ton bowl of punch for people to row across in boats. "It's amazing to design these things that you know will likely never happen again in your entire life," Bompas says. But the artists are still most famous for their jellies. Bompas recently wondered aloud whether there was any other food that delights people in the same way.

Bompas and Parr's success lies in their conviction that they can make the impossible possible, and in their willingness to nerd things up. They spend much of their time poring over historical cookbooks, like Salvador Dal?'s Les D?ners de Gala, and befriending people who might be able to help them, like the menu archivist at the New York City Public Library. When they don't know how to do something?such as turn a gin and tonic into vapor without having it combust, for instance?their intense curiosity charms people into giving them advice. "It takes all of five minutes to get in touch with a world expert online," Bompas says.

One example: When they had trouble unmolding jellies from ceramic molds and couldn't find answers in their many old cookbooks, they contacted "foremost jelly expert" Ivan Day, a food historian. Day explained that jelly makers traditionally lined ceramic jelly molds with mutton fat, but that vegetable shortening works fine. "If you're total jelly geeks, like us, this was a very exciting discovery," Bompas says.

Fear of Antidepressants Keep Many ... - Health Nutrition and Fitness

TUESDAY, Sept. 13 (HealthDay News) ? For a nation that seems ready to pop a pill for any ill, a new study suggests that the opposite seems true for some people with symptoms of depression, whose concerns about the side effects of antidepressants were the top reason they wouldn?t disclose warning signs to their doctors.

A phone survey of more than 1,000 adults who had previously participated in the California Behavioral Risk Factor Survey System, which probed depression-related beliefs, showed that 43 percent reported one or more reasons for not talking to their primary care physician about their depression. Nearly a quarter of them worried that their doctor would recommend antidepressants ? the most frequently cited reason for withholding the information.

Other stated barriers to sharing depressive symptoms included the belief that it?s not a primary care physician?s job to deal with emotional issues (16 percent) and concerns about medical record confidentiality (15 percent). At least 10 percent said they were fearful of being referred to a counselor or psychiatrist and of being labeled a psychiatric patient.

?When patients are diagnosed with depression, they can go into a state of shock emotionally and view it as some kind of indictment of personality or character,? said Dr. Norman Sussman, a professor of psychiatry at New York University Langone Medical Center, who was not involved in the study. ?People would almost prefer to get a serious medical diagnosis than be told they have a psychiatric disorder.?

The study is published in the September/October 2011 issue of the Annals of Family Medicine, and was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.

About 10 percent of Americans suffer from depression at any given time, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which released a report early this month indicating about half the population will experience some form of mental health problem at some point in their lives.

Study authors noted the irony that those who were most reluctant to talk to a primary care physician about their depression tended to be those who had the most potential to benefit from such a conversation ? patients with moderate to severe depressive symptoms.

Co-author Dr. Richard L. Kravitz, a professor of internal medicine at University of California, Davis, said targeted education programs ? such as brochures or posters in primary care offices reminding patients that doctors are interested in hearing about symptoms of depression ? are simple ways to nudge conversations that could be life-altering or even lifesaving.

?On the one hand, the fact that 16 percent of patients felt it wasn?t their primary doctor?s job to deal with depression meant that [84 percent] did feel it was within their doctor?s purview,? said Kravitz, also co-vice chair of research in the department of internal medicine. ?Always, the glass is half full or half empty. But overall, the news is mixed and there are . . . some simple things physicians can do in their own practices.?

Also a concern is that primary care physicians may fail to recognize depressive symptoms in their patients, said Dr. Alan Manevitz, a clinical psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Manevitz, noting that many primary doctors prescribe anti-depressants after a ?haphazard? diagnostic process, may not follow up correctly because of time constraints or an overconcentration on physical complaints.

?A major reason people don?t like to reveal things about themselves is they?re afraid their doctor then may not take physical symptoms seriously ? they?re worried their symptoms may be minimized because they?re depressed,? he said. ?That?s a myth. I think it?s something doctors are much more sophisticated about.?

Sussman said the implications of not reporting and treating depression can be serious, with damaging effects on careers, relationships and overall health. About 8.4 million Americans had suicidal thoughts in 2008 and 2.2 million made plans to kill themselves, according to the recent CDC report.

?The patients are correct in that there?s a certain amount of misgivings in being treated with antidepressants,? which are linked to sexual dysfunction, weight gain and even some cardiac effects, Sussman said. ?No one wants to take these medications if they don?t have to, but at least two-thirds get some benefit. So there are consequences of not telling your doctor.?

In some cases, physicians can work with patients? concerns about medication side effects by starting with the lowest doses of antidepressants known to be effective. Patients who choose a treatment plan that does not include antidepressants can also benefit from a referral to a psychologist, who can work with them in talk therapy and closely monitor their depression.

Spotify to lay down beats for Ford

It's only been two months since Spotify made its stateside debut, and it's already getting in bed with an American staple. No, it hasn't struck a deal with Beyonce or Britney, but the fine folks at Autoblog are reporting that the streaming music service will make its way into vehicles sporting the Ford SYNC AppLink system "in the near future." Details are otherwise vague, but we'd be interested to hear how the outfit's "exclusive automotive advertising partner" feels about the deal.

Democratic Party fundraising slumps in August (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? The Democratic National Committee raised about $5.5 million in August, its worst fundraising month of the year, down from $6.7 million in July, according to figures provided by Democratic officials on Saturday and Federal Election Commission filings.

The low fundraising figure for August was confirmed by a senior Democratic official, who said it would not be officially disclosed until September 20.

Both the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and President Barack Obama's re-election campaign were forced to curtail fundraising during the summer because of the negotiations with congressional Republicans over raising the debt limit, which led Obama to cancel fundraisers around the country.

The summer before an election year also is traditionally a relatively slow time for fundraising.

Obama, with slumping job approval ratings amid ongoing economic worries, is seeking re-election in November 2012.

For the year 2011 to date, the DNC and Obama's campaign have raised roughly $118 million, according to a presentation Saturday from DNC Treasurer Andrew Tobais and DNC National Finance Director Jane Stetson. The finance officials disclosed the figure to a meeting of the DNC.

The $118 million includes $20.6 million raised by the DNC in the first quarter of the year, $86 million raised by the DNC and the Obama campaign in the second quarter, $6.7 million raised by the DNC in July, and roughly $5.5 million in August, a Democratic official said. The official said the numbers are preliminary and may change when formally reported.

The figure does not include most of the funds raised by Obama's campaign in the third quarter, which will end on September 30, according to Democratic finance officials.

Democratic Party Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who led her first full committee meeting, said the party needs to rally behind Obama's $447 billion jobs plan aimed at jump-starting the economy and hiring, as well as his own re-election prospects.

"There is only one job the Republicans care about ... Barack Obama's," Wasserman Schultz said at the meeting for the committee's top brass in Chicago Saturday.

Arkansas museum showcases World War II Japanese American art (Reuters)

LITTLE ROCK, Ark (Reuters) ? For decades, Mable Rose Jamison Vogel hauled trunks of art and documents -- bits and pieces of a remarkable chapter in American history -- around the country whenever she moved.

Created by Japanese Americans while they were held captive in Arkansas camps during World War II, the paintings, sculptures, carved wooden bird pins and even a belt made from an orange electrical cord told stories of daily life in a dark era in American history.

Vogel was one of their art teachers, encouraging them to decorate their dire surroundings. Her efforts helped preserve the tales of tens of thousands of Americans who were forced into camps by the U.S. government after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.

This weekend, "The Art of Living" exhibit opens at the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies in Little Rock. with more than 100 artifacts from Vogel's collection and additional pieces by twin sisters Kazuko Tanaka and Yetsuko Saguchi, who were interned at Rohwer.

"There has been a groundswell of interest in this history," said Nathania Sawyer, the exhibit's producer. "This collection gives a very deep picture of how these people were using art in their everyday life."

The government operated 10 camps during World War II in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, California and Idaho. Several other states had temporary camps.

After the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941, military leaders feared that Japanese Americans on the West Coast posed a national threat. The government forced 110,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans living along the Pacific Coast into what President Franklin D. Roosevelt called "concentration camps" in sparse areas. More than half of them were American citizens.

They were allowed little time to settle business affairs or sell or store their belongings. They were instructed to bring only what they could carry, including bedding and dishes. Once at camp, families lived in cramped single-room quarters until the end of the war. They worked the land, and children attended school. Each camp had its own mayor and police department.

Art was both a popular pastime and an escape from life in dire conditions. At some camps, jazz bands became popular.

The Japanese Americans in Arkansas collected and made materials for their art. One landscape in the collection was painted on discarded denim. Cardboard and box tops were used as canvases. Discarded wood and wire were transformed into sculptures. Burlap became woven rugs.

"Jamie Vogel was so diligent in preserving this story," Sawyer said. "She was very interested in these students and the people who were doing art in the camps. Over the years, she loaned it out, put on exhibitions all over the country and kept the story alive. It offers a very deep picture and how these people were using art in their everyday life."

Jennifer Carmen, a fine and decorative art appraiser in Little Rock, calls the Vogel collection "unique among internment collections" in its vast scope of documenting day-to-day life in the camp.

In June, the National Park Service awarded 24 grants totaling $2.9 million to preserve these sites and interpret Japanese American life during this era.

In 2006, Congress established the grants program to give up to $38 million after President Clinton, in 2000, recommended that the Department of Interior preserve this part of history.

The first grants were awarded in 2009.

Arkansas, which received three grants this year, was the only Southern state to have camps. For the last 10 years, Arkansas has hosted various educational events about the two camps.

In 2004, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock created a series of events called "Life Interrupted," which included a reunion of 1,300 people who had lived in the camps.

Star Trek star George Takei, whose family was sent to Rohwer, attended the event.

The art ended up at the Butler Center after decades of efforts by Vogel and her friend, Rosalie Santine Gould, a former mayor of Gould, Ark.

When she died in 1994, she left a substantial part of the collection to Santine Gould, who has spent her life preserving the story of the two camps at Jerome and Rohwer, Ark., about 100 miles south of Little Rock.

Last year, Gould gave the collection, which was sought by many major art museums, to the Butler Center.
