Couple from '16 and Pregnant' arrested in Arkansas

(AP) ? A couple featured on the first season of the MTV reality show "16 and Pregnant" have lost their child to the state and face criminal charges after officers serving a search warrant found their home was filled with feces, flies and maggots, police said Thursday.

Joshua Rendon and Ebony Jackson-Rendon, now both 19, were charged Tuesday after the search of their home at the Little Rock Air Force Base. The Arkansas Department of Human Services took custody of their 2-year-old child, who was born while the TV show was taping. Rendon is a member of the Air Force.

They face felony charges of maintaining a drug premises and unauthorized use of another's property to facilitate a crime. They're also charged with misdemeanor child endangerment, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

Officers obtained the search warrant after being called in by base officials.

Jacksonville police Capt. Kenny Boyd said officers found one gram of synthetic marijuana, empty packaging and pipes allegedly used to smoke the controlled substance.

Boyd also said the home was in "deplorable" condition. Human and animal feces were on the floors and walls in each room, and animal control officers took away three dogs that were kept inside, Boyd said. The house was full of flies, with collections of maggots in a number of areas, he said.

Rendon said over the phone Thursday that "it's not in our best interest" to talk about the case.

MTV confirmed they were the same teenagers who appeared on "16 and Pregnant."

Rendon's desire to join the Air Force was an element in the show. He and Jackson-Rendon lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., which is home to the Air Force Academy. An MTV bio calls Jackson-Rendon a "military brat," who lived with her mother but spent most of her time with Rendon, who was her fiance at the time.

They both had planned to enlist in the Air Force, but a recruiter told them only one of them could because Jackson-Rendon was pregnant.

A court appearance for them is scheduled for Oct. 6, when they may enter a plea. Both are free on $8,000 bond, Boyd said. Neither had an attorney listed.

How To Advertise Your Website Part I | Advertising Internet

If you know how to advertise your website effectively, you will have at least part of the key to internet marketing success. Advertising is the one aspect of internet marketing about which most newcomers to the business are unsure.

In fact, there are many more ways of advertising an online business than there are of an offline business. Think on it for a moment. If you have a shop in Fifth Avenue New York, or Regent Street London, how do you attract and satisfy orders from Japan, China or India? Unless you employ marketing geniuses, or have a website, you cannot. You therefore have an advantage with an online business if you know how to advertise it effectively.

There are many ways to advertise a business on the internet, some costing money and some free; some using the internet and some not. Here, we will provide a brief overview of a few that will provide you with some ideas that you can think and expand on. First the paid adverts.

Most search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, have their own pay per click (PPC) advertising programs. In the case of Google, it is Adwords, and Yahoo has their Yahoo Search Marketing, formerly known as Overture. Some of the minor search engines also have their own PPC advertising systems.

PPC systems are keyword based whereby you select keywords with which to advertise your products. Each keyword has a specific price you pay that is dependant on the popularity and demand for that keyword. Whenever a visitor uses a search term the same as your keyword to reach your advert, and clicks on it, you are charged the bid price for the keyword. Hence, ?pay per click?.

Used properly, pay per click advertising can reap high rewards, but unless you control your expenditure, it can cost a great deal of money. However, that is not the only method of advertising that can be used by the rich to promote their website. Ezine advertising is also popular. You can have an advert placed in any ezine relevant to your topic or niche and reach a wide audience that is targeted to your type of product. This can also be very fruitful since it, like ppc advertising, reaches an audience that is interested in what you have to offer.

By the way, do you want to learn more about using articles like this to drive traffic to your website and increase online conversions?

Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal: Navy Lt. Gary Ross, Partner Dan Swezy Wed As Military's Gay Ban Formally Ends

DUXBURY, Vt. -- When Navy Lt. Gary Ross and his partner were searching for a place to get married, they settled on a site in Vermont, in part because the state is in the Eastern time zone.

That way, the two men were able to recite their vows before family and friends at the first possible moment after the formal repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Just after midnight Tuesday, the partners of 11 years were married.

"I think it was a beautiful ceremony. The emotions really hit me...but it's finally official," Ross said.

Hours before the change took effect early Tuesday, the American military was also making final preparations for the historic policy shift. The Pentagon announced that it was already accepting applications from openly gay candidates, although officials said they would wait a day before reviewing them.

Ross, 33, and Dan Swezy, a 49-year-old civilian, traveled from their home in Tucson, Ariz., so they could get married in Vermont, the first state to allow gays to enter into civil unions and one of six that have legalized same-sex marriage.

Ross wore his dress uniform for the ceremony beginning at 11:45 p.m. Monday at Duxbury's Moose Meadow Lodge, a log cabin bed-and-breakfast perched on a hillside about 15 miles northwest of Montpelier.

The lodge says it hosted the state's first gay wedding in 2009.

Justice of the Peace Greg Trulson proclaimed the marriage at exactly midnight.

"This is Gary's official coming out," Trulson said.

Ross and Swezy were joined by a small group of close friends and some family who shared champagne with them after the ceremony.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said Monday that the military is prepared for the end of "don't ask, don't tell," a practice adopted in 1993 that allowed gays to serve as long as they did not openly acknowledge their sexual orientation. Commanders were not allowed to ask.

Last week, the Pentagon said 97 percent of the military has undergone training in the new law.

In preparation for Tuesday's repeal, all branches of the military have spent several months updating regulations. Lifting the ban also brings a halt to all pending investigations, discharges and other proceedings that were begun under the old law.

President Barack Obama signed the law last December and in July certified that lifting the ban will not diminish the military's ability to fight. Some in Congress remain opposed to repeal, arguing that it may undermine order and discipline.

Existing standards of personal conduct, such as those pertaining to public displays of affection, will continue regardless of sexual orientation.

There will be no immediate changes to eligibility for military benefits. All service members are already entitled to certain benefits, such as designating a partner as a life insurance beneficiary or as a caregiver in the Wounded Warrior program. But Swezy won't receive military health insurance or access to a support group when Ross is at sea.

Gay marriage is an even thornier issue. A Navy proposal to train chaplains to conduct same-sex civil unions in states where they are legal was shelved earlier this year after more than five dozen lawmakers objected. The Pentagon is reviewing the issue.

Ross, a 2002 graduate of the Naval Academy, is a surface warfare officer at the Army's Fort Huachuca. He expects to return to sea next spring.

He met Swezy in early 2000 while Ross was still an academy student. At the time, he didn't think through the personal implications of the military's ban on gay and lesbian service members serving openly. But as his relationship with Swezy grew, it became important.

Their Tucson home is about a two-hour commute from Fort Huachuca, which is near the Mexican border. Under "don't ask, don't tell," Ross could not talk about his relationship with Swezy, but he said some of his co-workers must have known.

"Anyone with any moderate perception could have figured it out," he said.

When he goes back to work Thursday, Ross isn't planning to advertise that he's married to a man.

"Even though the law goes away, it will still be the white elephant in the room until everyone comes to terms with it," he said.

Ross said the end of "don't ask, don't tell" will simplify many aspects of his life.

"It requires you to lie several times a day," Ross said of the old system. "Being in the military is extremely invasive. It becomes a web of excuses you make when you try to be as honest as possible but you can't be honest."

He hopes being able to talk about his relationship will make his work easier, too.

"If you're standing watch at midnight on a surface ship there's not much to talk about," he said. "It becomes very difficult to trust someone you can't be honest with."

Cornelius Animal Control working with Lake Norman Lucky Cats ...

Cornelius Animal Control (CAC) recently announced a partnership with the Lake Norman Lucky Cat Program to facilitate a humane technique to help reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens in the town?s shelter.

?It is our hope that through this new partnership with CAC we can help even more residents with spay/neuter services to lower our numbers of unwanted cats in Cornelius,? said Abigail Jennings, president of the LNLCP. Cornelius Police Chief Bence Hoyle added, ?Working with Lucky Cats and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Control to reduce cat populations by reducing the reproduction of feral cats is, by far, the less expensive, most productive, and the most humane way to deal with these populations. In order to have any significant impact on future feral cat populations, we have to start focusing upstream, and this program certainly does that.?

For more information on the Trap Neuter Release(TNR) program, please contact the LNLCP at (704) 877-7779 or visit www.LuckyCats.org. For neighborhoods with community cat problems, an educational program on TNR is available for HOAs interested in exploring this humane solution to feline overpopulation. A fundraiser to support this initiative is planned for October 13, 2011, in conjunction with National Feral Cat Day, at Alton?s restaurant in Jetton Village. For more information, contact the LNLCP.

3-D Printing Gets Ahead: How Does a Printer Make a Fossil?

    Features | Technology

3-D printers can create models and prototypes, replicas of your head, even living tissues?and at Lehman College, they reproduce and reconstruct ancient fossils

    Image: Sophie Bushwick

In a small basement in the Bronx, the pride of place does not go to a shelf occupied by blue models of deformed skulls. Instead, the focus of the Lehman College 3D Virtual and Solid Visualization Laboratory is a large gray printer.

This is no dot-matrix monster. It's a precision three-dimensional printer that lays down layers of liquid blue plastic to create 3-D models of "monkey" skulls (fossil primate skulls, actually). Using this method, the lab's founder, paleoanthropologist Eric Delson, creates detailed replicas of fossil finds as well as larger models of them for closer study. These models serve as teaching tools, allowing students to examine replicas of fossils too rare and fragile for direct contact. As a research aid, 3-D printing simplifies fossil reconstruction and even allows Delson to simulate the skulls of primate ancestors whose remains never fossilized.

Designers in other fields use this technology to print out prototypes to decide on the best possible pattern to send into production. Other researchers have printed working transistors and solar cells. Even printed organs for human beings may soon be viable.

3-D printing has advanced quickly. Only 10 years ago products printed on expensive 3-D printers "looked terrible," Delson says, because the vertical layers were too thick and far apart, producing bubbly surfaces. But five years later the results were so improved that Delson could buy his Objet Eden260 for $150,000. Today, smaller printers now cost tens of thousands of dollars, and home printers like the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic cost less than $1,300.

At the Lehman visualization lab, a window on the 1.2-meter-tall printer reveals a printhead as wired as Medusa's pate next to a central black tray. A digital representation of the tray fills one of two computer screens connected to the printer. At the console, graduate student Claudia Astorino loads a digital image of a mandible; about a minute later, a 3-D lower jaw appears on the digital tray.

Astorino can slide the jaw on screen to a different position, rotate it, even shrink it to the size of a fingernail or blow it up to the dimensions of a modern human chomper. Each of these modifications can be made to all three dimensions, or just one. For example, one skull was doubled in size, width and height, but not in depth, yielding a model that looks like it ran full-tilt into a brick wall, squashing its face toward the back of its head. The misshapen pate adorns the shelf of deformed skulls, along with melted-looking specimens that set improperly or whose eye sockets filled with plastic.

And more than one sample can be printed at once?the jaw on the screen only fills a corner of the tray, leaving room for others. With the click of a mouse, another mandible could join it, or perhaps a model of a full skull. When Astorino sets a print job in motion, she first places as many models as she needs, decides on the proper size, and decides on the best orientations to give the models high resolution without taking too long to print.

Because of the 3-D printing method, the vertical direction will have the highest resolution?but it also takes the longest time to print. When the computer triggers the machine, the printhead moves into action, gliding back and forth over the physical tray and depositing liquid blue plastic to form the very bottom layer of whatever 3-D shape glows on the computer screen. This layer, only about 20 microns thick?about a fifth the width of a human hair?then sets, with the help of ultraviolet light that triggers the transition from liquid to solid. The tray sinks a fraction of an inch, lowering itself gradually into the body of the printer, and then the printing head begins moving again to deposit the next layer. All told, these many layers give the vertical direction a resolution of 1,200 dots per inch (dpi), which is better than the resolution of about 300 to 600 dpi in the other directions.

Oil mats after BP spill pose long-term ecosystem threat: study (Reuters)

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) ? Auburn University researchers said oil mats submerged in the seabed more than a year after the biggest oil spill in U.S. history pose long-term threats to coastal ecosystems across the northern Gulf of Mexico.

The study, released on Tuesday by the school's engineering department, showed that tarballs churned to the surface by Tropical Storm Lee and deposited along Alabama beaches this month had "essentially identical" chemical composition as samples taken from mats after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

"Our interpretation of these observations is that submerged tar mats buried offshore of this coastline are breaking apart to yield these tar balls," the study reads, estimating the tarballs in question contained about 17 percent oil by mass.

The civil engineering study -- conducted prior to, during and after the tropical storm's landfall on Alabama beaches -- indicated the spill's remnants remained largely unchanged 17 months after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank off the coast of Louisiana.

The data directly linked the recently deposited tarballs to the 2010 event that resulted in more than 200 million gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico from BP PLC's Macondo well.

"The data question the validity of the widely held belief that submerged oil from the Deepwater Horizon accident is substantially weathered and thus depleted of most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons," the study said.

"Also, it supports the hypothesis that submerged oil may continue to pose some level of long-term risk to nearshore ecosystems," it said.

The study added that the tropical storm had demonstrated the "potential for remobilization" by similar storm events in the future but said the magnitude of such events could not be anticipated with any level certainty.

BP spokesman Scott Dean said the Auburn research has not had any immediate impact on the oil company's ongoing response to the spill.

"We're looking at the study, but it doesn't change our commitment to the response," Dean said. "We'll continue to have crews out collecting tarballs as the reports come in."

Specifically, BP dispatched Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique teams to the affected areas following Tropical Storm Lee and provided additional manual cleanup personnel to "augment existing cleanup operations.

The SCAT teams consist of an environmental lead, a safety lead and representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Alabama Department of Environmental Management and BP.
