Occupy San Fran. protesters now carrying shivs - Le?gal In?sur?rec?tion

The Occupy rallies are devolving into the equivalent of the prison yard, as reflected in multiple incidents around the country of rape and killing, and this story about the slashing of a San Francisco police officer?with a type of shiv commonly used by prison gangs?(h/t reader):

One San Francisco police officer was slashed by a razor and another had his uniform torn and cheek cut in a clash with Occupy San Francisco protesters Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

About 3:30 p.m., near the Embarcadero and Broadway, police attempted to prevent marching demonstrators from blocking the intersection where MUNI light rail tracks are located.

A female protester emerged from the crowd and an ?exacto razor blade attached to a pen or pencil-like object,? San Francisco police said in an email.

?The female slashed the inside of the officer?s hand and ran back into the crowd before the officer had time to realize he was cut,? police said.

In a second incident, a protester grabbed an officer?s police radio and ran back into the crowd. As the officer attempted to retrieve it, a second protester blocked the officer and tore his uniform and cut his cheek, police said,
intimating that a weapon had been used.

This is just another of those ?can you imagine if the Tea Party did that? moments.

Droid RAZR's CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA variants teased in China, the latter with 720p display

Chinese mobile customers face a similar dilemma as their American counterparts: they have to choose either China Unicom's WCDMA network, China Telecom's CDMA2000 network or China Mobile's more obscure TD-SCDMA offering. Needless to say, this can be a real headache for phone fanatics stuck on a carrier that doesn't support their desired devices, unless they don't mind surfing the web on 2G radio (if compatible at all). Luckily, nowadays Motorola tends to take good care of all potential Chinese customers whenever it rolls out a new Android phone, including the Droid RAZR (aka XT910, pictured right) in this case. Read on to find out what these two new phones are about.

Shakira, Calle 13 dominate Latin Grammys

Calle 13, the Puerto Rican hip-hop duo acclaimed for its politically charged lyrics, Afro-Caribbean beats and raunchy dance anthems, emerged as the new darling of Latin music Thursday night after sweeping the Latin Grammy Awards and collecting its 19th award from the Latin Recording Academy.

The recognition saw brothers Rene Perez Joglar and Eduardo Jos? Cabra Mart?nez break the records for the most awards collected over a career and the most awards won in a single night, even as the anti-establishment rappers blasted the mainstream music industry and urged musicians to fight "the easy and what sells."

"It's a triumph for music and art," said Joglar, the group's frontman, in Spanish after breaking the record previously held by 17-time-winner Juanes for most overall Latin Grammys.

In all, Calle 13 was nominated for 10 awards during the 12th annual Latin Grammys in Las Vegas Thursday, and took home all but one because the rappers were nominated twice for album of the year for their work on Shakira's "Sale el Sol." The awards recognized three of Calle 13's songs from its most recent album "Entren Los Que Quieran" and cast a political overtone over the annual music celebration. The rappers are frequent government critics and their lyrics aim harsh words at the White House and the Vatican, while espousing the joys of poverty and Latin American culture.

"For me, this is a gift I'm giving to everyone so that they can feel proud of their roots, of their homeland," Joglar said. "That's really lacking here in the United States."

One of Calle 13's more controversial songs, "Calma Pueblo," won best alternative song, with its lyrics that proclaim the Vatican the largest mafia in the world. The group also won producer of the year, best short-form music video and best tropical song for its ode to behaving badly, "Vamo' A Portarnos Mal."

Calle 13's ultimate domination seemed predestined as the rappers opened the show with an emotional rendition of their anthem "Latinoamerica" after picking up four awards during the pre-telecast ceremony.

"May this transport you to your roots, your streets ... and may you feel it here in your heart," Joglar said in Spanish before the rousing performance dedicated to Latin Americans.

No other nominee came close to matching Calle 13's success, not even Shakira, who was recognized as the youngest recipient of the Latin Recording Academy's Person of the Year award and also won best female pop vocal album. Shakira attributed the accolades to her fellow stars.

"With their voices and their music, they cure all our pains and make us forget our sorrows," she said in Spanish.

The awards show was a blend of genres and talents, as performers from nearly 100 countries gathered at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on the Las Vegas Strip for a night of Spanish pop, rock, salsa, rap and country. Crossover stars Sean Kingston, Usher and Demi Lovato were among the dozens of pop stars who shared the stage, along with Mexican rocker Alejandra Guzman, Puerto Rican rappers Wisin and Yandel and Bronx-born crooner Prince Royce. Award presenters included Erik Estrada, Zoe Saldana and Sofia Vergara.

The international lineup made for a Spanglish flair, with Vergara, whose Colombian accent is a staple punch line on the hit TV series "Modern Family," welcoming English viewers in her adopted tongue. Kermit the Frog also spoke in both Spanish and English, introducing Mexican band Intocable.

"Many frogs love Latino music because we get to hop around," Kermit said.

Calle 13 has a long history of lacing social messages over bass-thumping beats and its latest album continued that tradition, riffing on the exploitation of dark-skinned workers and corrupt governments. Joglar said he hoped Thursday's recognition would encourage other musicians to "break with the existing system."

He noted several times that Calle 13's music is often shunned by radio stations across the Western hemisphere, before recounting advice a famous musician once gave him: "'The day you are on the radio a lot, worry, because you are doing something wrong,' and so we have listened to him," Joglar said.

Calle 13 first perfected its Latin Grammy supremacy in 2009, when it won all of the five nominations it earned that year. Mart?nez said the internet has helped Calle 13 expand its audience, but he lamented that many people in poor nations do not have computer access.

Story: Winners of the 45th Annual CMA Awards

Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation, said academy members had chosen to honor Calle 13 perhaps because of its raw lyrics, and mused that the group could soon add to its two Grammy awards.

"Musicians are creative people who are not afraid of controversy and they speak their minds, they speak from the heart," Portnow said backstage.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rican newcomer Sie7e took home a Grammy for best new artist. He performed his Spanglish love song "Tengo Tu Love" with Mexican-American rapper Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas and cited Calle 13 as an influence.

"Another one for Puerto Rico," Sie7e cried in Spanish after accepting his gramophone trophy.

Mexican rock legend Mana gave the first duet of the show, performing with Royce "Lluvia al Corazon" and "El Verdadero Amor Perdona" as the image of a beating heart adorned with thorns graced the stage.

"My mom is a big Mana fan. Never would I have imagined being in the same room as them," Royce said backstage.

Mana went on to win best rock album for "Drama y Luz," with frontman Fher Olvera proclaiming that rock lives on.

Pitbull and Marc Anthony also shared the stage, pumping out their bilingual club banger "Rain Over Me" as dozens of Las Vegas burlesque dancers shimmied under an indoor rain shower.

Wisin and Yandel were joined by Kingston on stage. They spit out three hits: "Estoy Enamorado," "Fire Burning" and "Fever."

Scientists discover how to design drugs that could target particular nerve cells

Thursday, November 10, 2011

The future of drug design lies in developing therapies that can target specific cellular processes without causing adverse reactions in other areas of the nervous system. Scientists at the Universities of Bristol and Li?ge in Belgium have discovered how to design drugs to target specific areas of the brain.

The research, led by Professor Neil Marrion at Bristol's School of Physiology and Pharmacology and published in this week's Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences USA (PNAS), will enable the design of more effective drug compounds to enhance nerve activity in specific nerves.

The team has been working on a subtype of ion channel called SK channels. Ion channels are proteins that act as pores in a cell membrane and help control the excitability of nerves.

Rather like an electrical circuit, ion channels work by allowing the flow of 'charged' potassium, sodium and calcium ions to enter or exit cell membranes through a network of pores formed by the channels, a subtype of which is the SK channel family.

The researchers have been using a natural toxin found in bee venom, called apamin, known for its ability to block different types of SK channel. SK channels enable a flow of potassium ions in and out of nerve cells that controls activity. The researchers have taken advantage of apamin being able to block one subtype of SK channel better than the others, to identify how three subtype SK channels [SK1-3] can be selectively blocked.

Neil Marrion, Professor of Neuroscience at the University, said: "The problem with developing drugs to target cellular processes has been that many cell types distributed throughout the body might all have the same ion channels. SK channels are also distributed throughout the brain, but it is becoming obvious that these channels might be made of more than one type of SK channel subunit. It is likely that different nerves have SK channels made from different subunits. This would mean that developing a drug to block a channel made of only one SK channel protein will not be therapeutically useful, but knowing that the channels are comprised of multiple SK subunits will be the key."

The study's findings have identified how SK channels are blocked by apamin and other ligands. Importantly, it shows how channels are folded to allow a drug to bind. This will enable drugs to be designed to block those SK channels that are made of more than one type of SK channel subunit, to target the symptoms of dementia and depression more effectively.

Vincent Seutin, one co-author of the paper, said: "Our study also shows a difference in the way apamin and nonpeptidic (potentially a useful drug) ligands interact with the channel. This may have important implications in terms of drug design."

Rakuten signs agreement to purchase Kobo

Rakuten, Inc. has just announced that it has signed a "definitive agreement" to "to acquire 100% of total issued and outstanding shares" of Kobo for a total of $315 million in cash. According to the press release, Rakuten is "one of the world's top 3 e-commerce companies by revenue." Just this February, Kobo's major American retail partner, Borders, filed for bankruptcy. Rakuten CEO Hiroshi Mikitani had this to say about the acquisition:

We are very excited about this next step. Kobo provides one of the world's most communal eBook reading experiences with its innovative integration of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter; while Rakuten offers Kobo unparalleled opportunities to extend its reach through some of the world's largest regional e-commerce companies, including Buy.com in the US, Tradoria in Germany, Rakuten Brazil, Rakuten Taiwan, Lekutian in China, TARAD in Thailand, and Rakuten Belanja Online in Indonesia, and of course, Rakuten Ichiba in Japan.

Rakuten has indicated that its latest acquisition will maintain its headquarters, management and employees following the final purchase. We'll be listening in on the conference call and will keep you posted on any more details. In the meantime, a full press release is available for your reading pleasure after the break.

We just got off a conference call with Kobo CEO Michael Serbinis, and he stressed that the acquisition was made to help Kobo expand its market share internationally and to gain the resources needed to continue to grow the company. It wasn't borne of necessity after the Borders liquidation, and Kobo was never shopping itself to potential buyers -- the partnership with Rakuten just made good business sense. And it's not just about making money abroad, either. Serbinis was also quick to point out that partnering up with Rakuten-owned Buy.com gives Kobo a channel to increase its presence in the US as well. Looks like the e-reader market's about to really heat up, and not just because of the Fire.

'Lost Interview' shows a younger, healthier Jobs

(AP) ? A recently discovered video copy of a 1995 interview with Steve Jobs shows the Apple co-founder at a healthier time, not long before he rejoined and revitalized the company.

There doesn't appear to be much new in "Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview," which is being shown at Landmark theaters in 19 cities around the country starting Nov. 16. In a copy viewed by The Associated Press on Tuesday, Jobs discusses topics such as how he got interested in computers as a child, his anger at being ousted from Apple in 1985 after a clash with then-CEO John Sculley, and his irritation with competitor Microsoft Corp. ? subjects that have been covered elsewhere, and extensively in Walter Isaacson's recently released "Steve Jobs: A Biography."

Jobs and co-founder Steve Wozniak started Apple in 1976 and left in 1985. Jobs returned in 1997 and is credited with rescuing Apple from dire financial straits.

The video does give a look at a healthier version of Jobs ? who died in October at age 56 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer ? than many people have seen in years. On camera, his face looks full and he sports a shaggy head of dark brown hair, along with his signature black mock turtleneck and rimless glasses. At the time, Jobs was running a company called NeXT Computer, which Apple bought in 1996 for its operating software.

Ten minutes of the footage originally appeared in the 1995 PBS miniseries "Triumph of the Nerds." The master tapes disappeared but an unedited VHS copy of the interview was recently found in "Triumph of the Nerds" director Paul Sen's garage. In the copy viewed Tuesday, "Triumph of the Nerds" maker Robert Cringely introduces the footage and poses questions to Jobs off camera.
