Screen Shot 2012-01-03 at 8.47.36 PMI've heard like a billion people complain about this recently so here goes: When you're starving you don't want to read through thousands of Yelp reviews on your phone or download a random PDF from a terrible restaurant website that's so slow-load it's indecipherable. You just want to know where a restaurant is, what it has to eat, and whether or not it's open. 'Menu and Hours' is a Kickstarter project designed just to give you just the menu, hours, contact info and location of local eateries -- the antidote to unnavigable?mobile restaurant websites and TMI foodie services like Urbanspoon. US hails preliminary EU deal on Iran oil ban

The United States said Wednesday it is "very good news" that European Union governments are moving toward an oil embargo against Iran in a bid to curb its nuclear ambitions.

In Brussels, diplomats said the EU governments have reached a preliminary agreement on an oil embargo against Iran but are debating when it should come into force.

State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland summed it up as "very good news and the result of lots of consultations among us, between the US and EU countries."

She said the development is "very, very welcome, and supportive of the intent of the Congress when it passed the new legislation at the end of the year."

US President Barack Obama on the final day of 2011 signed into law tough new sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and financial sector, in a move that could intensify a brewing Gulf showdown.

The sanctions are meant to hit Iran's crucial oil sector and require foreign firms to make a choice between doing business with Tehran's financial sector and central bank or the mighty US economy.

Nuland hoped for even broader sanctions.

"So these [EU measures] are the kinds of steps that we would like to see not just from our close allies and partners in places like Europe but from countries around the world," she said.

"Because we do believe that this is consistent with tightening the noose on Iran economically," Nuland also said, adding: "We think that the place to get Iran's attention is with regard to its oil sector."

Iowa Caucus Stresses Voters' Ideological Split Over GOP Politics (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The three players leaving the rest of Republican candidates in the dust at the Iowa caucus are Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul. The New York Times has tallied the final votes and Romney beat Santorum by eight votes. Paul came in with 21.4 percent. Left far behind were Newt Gingrich (13.3 percent), Rick Perry (10.3 percent) and Michele Bachmann (5 percent).

The electoral choices of caucus attendees underscore that -- even at the grass-roots level -- conservatives are floundering when it comes to choosing a decisive direction for the GOP. Moderate Romney is a direct opposite of a staunchly conservative Santorum. Libertarian Paul is opposed to virtually all the far-reaching legislative decisions Romney and Santorum have made in their respective positions as governor and senator.

To be fair, the far-reaching caucus consequences -- for GOP candidates -- should be called into question. Compare 2011 results with the 2008 Republican Iowa caucus outcomes. CNN showed that at the end of the night, Mike Huckabee came in with 35 percent, while Romney garnered 25 percent and Fred Thompson -- as well as John McCain -- lagged behind with 13 percent each. McCain eventually became the candidate for the presidency against Barack Obama.

Unlike this election cycle, 2008 Iowa voters favored a clear direction for their GOP leadership. The 10 percent spread between the winner and the first runner-up exemplifies decisive conservative values and attitudes. The somewhat baffling 2011 results show that just a handful of voters made the difference between a middle of the road approach and a right off center stand. There is a good chance that the Iowa microcosm will play out time and again during other 2012 primaries.

The candidates are also busy setting the tone for the foreseeable election future. "I want to take just a minute and congratulate a good friend of ours, Rick Santorum. He waged a great, positive campaign. I admire how positive he was," the Daily Caller quotes Gingrich during his concession speech. "I wish I could say that for all candidates," Gingrich sniped in the direction of Romney.

"With the voters' decision tonight, I've decided to return to Texas, assess the results of tonight's caucus, determine whether there is a path forward for myself in this race," the Washington Post quotes a visibly disappointed Perry.

Placing last in the second tier of Republican candidates, Bachmann is nevertheless not yet ready to re-evaluate. "It's the people of Iowa who chose tonight. It wasn't the pundits, it wasn't the media," the Los Angeles Times quotes her in the aftermath of the Iowa results. She quit the race this morning.

The Associated Press -- via YouTube -- highlights that Romney early on considered a second-place finish to be a clear victory and mandate to continue. Santorum took the state by storm, and much like a dark horse came from behind and took the lead. The Los Angeles Times showcases supporters' reactions of joyful disbelief and enthusiasm as his lead solidified.

In the final analysis, 2008 results have shown that the Iowa caucus may not be on par with the Sibylline Oracles when it comes to picking the actual Republican nominee. At the same time, the miniscule spread of votes between pure conservative and moderate Republican values functions quite adequately like a canary in a coalmine: The electorate is as divided over the meaning of conservative politics as the GOP leadership.

Broadcom befriends Sling and Myriad, outs new set-top and streaming chips

Busy days at Broadcom, which has already forgotten about its earlier 5G WiFi announcement and launched a barrage of new chips for set-top boxes and home networking. The line-up supports the latest MoCA 2.0 standard for greater network bandwidth over coax wiring, but even more interesting is what some of the SoCs can do for smart TV and streaming. The BCM7425 dual-tuner HD gateway SoC will support Sling Media's "place-shifting" platform, potentially making it easier for set-top manufacturers to enable TV streaming to mobile devices. A similar deal has been inked with Myriad over its clever Alien Vue software (shown above), allowing Broadcom-equipped boxes to run apps designed for Google TV and HTML 5 without the need for extra dedicated hardware. In short, if your service provider fails to make TV content smarter or easier to access in 2012, they won't be able to blame it on Broadcom. Further details in the PR combo after the break and at the source link.

Kitty litter ad doesn't pass smell test, judge rules

By Msnbc.com staff and wire

A New York judge has found?it implausible that a panel of 11 testers would stick their noses into jars containing cat poop ? repeatedly ? and say that they couldn't smell anything in the jars of excrement treated with carbon.

Really?

The judge, U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff (better known for?being tough on Wall Street shenanigans), ruled Wednesday that Clorox Co. could not air ads about its Fresh Step?kitty litter after?rival company, Church & Dwight, claimed the ads were false. Rakoff ruled that?the ads likely have caused Church & Dwight's business irreperable harm.

Rakoff issued a preliminary injunction to halt the ad, which began airing last February, while litigation continues.

In its commercial, Clorox featured what Church & Dwight described as "playful home videos" of cats engaging in "clever behavior," with a voiceover describing how cats are "smart enough" to choose litter with less odor.

It then showed green gas floating through two beakers. One held Fresh Step and a black substance labeled "carbon," and the other a white substance labeled "baking soda." The voiceover said: "We make Fresh Step scoopable litter with carbon, which is more effective at absorbing odors than baking soda."

Church & Dwight said the ad sent a false message that cat litter with baking soda fights odor less well than Fresh Step.

While not named in the ad, Arm & Hammer is the only major cat litter brand that uses baking soda.

Rakoff said Clorox's test assessing how litter fought odors was unreliable, noting that while Clorox sealed jars of cat waste for 22 to 26 hours prior to testing, "cats do not seal their waste."

The judge also agreed with a Church & Dwight expert that it was "highly implausible" that 11 testers could have repeatedly stuck their noses in jars of cat waste, and uniformly reported no odors from waste treated with carbon.

"Clorox's own evidence acknowledges that humans, even trained panelists, report smells even when none are present," he wrote in his ruling on Wednesday.

"We're disappointed by the court's ruling and stand by the truthfulness of our advertising," said Kathryn Caulfield, a spokeswoman for Oakland, California-based Clorox. "We intend to vigorously defend this matter."

Church & Dwight is based in Princeton, New Jersey, and had no immediate comment.

The case is Church & Dwight Co v. Clorox Co, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-01865.

US state dept acknowledges 'goof up' in its India maps

As US State Department on Wednesday posted a new map of India [ Images ] reflecting its long standing official position on the country's geographical boundaries, its spokesman acknowledged of having made a "goof up" in this regard, which had resulted in a strong objection from New Delhi [ Images ].

"We made a goof and we fixed it and we're now back in compliance with our own cartographical policy," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily news conference as she announced the posting of the new and corrected maps of India on the website of the State Department and its travel related sites.

The previous controversial maps, which showed parts of Jammu and Kashmir [ Images ] as part of Pakistan, was removed by the State Department in November after India's strong objection.

India maintains that the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.

"I'm thrilled and relieved to tell you that we have now put the revised maps up on our website," she said.

"What you will see when you look at these maps is that they reflect the fact that the United States takes no position on the dispute and urges all the parties to seek a peaceful resolution to resolving the claims," she said.

"What you'll see on the maps is consistent with what the US geographic position has been consistently: that there is a dashed line representing the 1972 Line of Control [ Images ], reflecting Kashmir's unresolved status," Nuland said.

"We neglected to actually label that dotted line in the last round of maps. It has now been labeled. The maps also add our standard disclaimer with regard to Kashmir that says that names and boundary representations are not necessarily authoritative. As I said, that reflects the fact that this is in? dispute and the US takes no position on the dispute," she said.

Herman Cain launches ?Cain?s Solutions Revolution? to ?keep 999 alive? (The Ticket)

Cain (AP)

Herman Cain appeared on Fox News Wednesday night to make what was billed as a "very big announcement" on Sean Hannity's show. Very big it was not.

The former Republican hopeful and pizza chain CEO did not endorse a current GOP candidate, as some had predicted he might. Nor did he announce he was getting back into the 2012 race, as Hannity teased he could.

Instead, Cain announced the launch--or continuation--of his 999 economic plan with another catchy tagline: "Cain's Solutions Revolution."

"The biggest comment when I ended my candidacy was, 'Keep 999 alive,'" Cain said. "And that's what this is about. The first solution we're going to promote actively is '999: The Revolution.'"

Cain continued: "The thing that didn't happen in Iowa--and it generally doesn't happen at a lot of the debates--is not enough is discussed about solutions, how you will fix things."

He also unveiled a new website for the endeavor with a name, CainConnections.com, that sounds vaguely like a personals site.

Cain said his goal is to get commitments from members of Congress to support his 999 plan before the 2012 election.

Earlier in the show, Cain was asked to assess the Iowa caucus results.

"Bittersweet," Cain said of watching the Iowa vote. "The sweet part was I didn't have to put my family through that grinder."

The bitter part, he said, was knowing what could have been--had the Cain train not been derailed by multiple sexual harassment allegations.

"When I ended my candidacy, I was leading in Iowa in those polls," Cain said.

Gingrich's fall from the top of those polls in the final weeks before the caucuses proved to Cain negative attacks work.

"You got to have the money to respond quickly and neutralize some it," Cain said. Gingrich did not.

Rick Santorum did well in Iowa "because he shook a lot of hands," Cain added. "Romney did as well as he did because he spent a lot of money."

The razor-thin margin of Romney's victory over Santorum and Paul meant there were no clear winners. "It was basically a statistical tie," he concluded. "Nobody can crow that they won."

D'Angelo covers Soundgarden's 'Black Hole Sun'

Virgin Records

By Anna Chan

Fans of R&B musician D'Angelo, your long wait for his followup to 2000's platinum-selling "Voodoo" may finally be coming to an end.

He's set to perform a few shows overseas, starting in Stockholm on Jan. 26. And on Monday, a demo of the neo-soul singer covering Soundgarden's hit "Black Hole Sun" off the 1994 album "Superunknown" surfaced on YouTube. (According to Spin, the recording may have been made in 2010.)

But fans of the 1990's hit may not be as excited as D'Angelo fans.

Save for a few lines from the chorus, this interpretation is pretty unrecognizable. Gone is ... pretty much everything wonderful about the?original. In its place is a tune that seems a bit flat and devoid of the emotional punch of the original. (It sounds like pretty elevator music.)?The vocals? Reminiscent of the Chipmunks whispering. True, it's not exactly fair to be judging a tune labeled as a?"demo," but when a cover of a hit drops, it's tough to resist comparing the new to the original masterpiece.

Check out D'Angelo's (unfinished) interpretation:

Bachmann adviser says she is ending GOP campaign (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? An adviser to Michele Bachmann says the Minnesota congresswoman is ending her bid to win the Republican presidential nomination after coming in last in the Iowa caucuses.

Bachmann finished sixth out of six candidates in the first of many contests to pick a Republican presidential candidate.

She canceled appearances planned for Wednesday in South Carolina and scheduled a news conference in Des Moines, Iowa, instead.

The adviser requested anonymity to speak before Bachmann makes the announcement.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann canceled her campaign trip to South Carolina on Wednesday after a dismal showing in the Iowa caucuses.

Campaign manager Keith Nahigian told The Associated Press that the Minnesota congresswoman planned a news conference in Iowa late Wednesday morning. Nahigian would not say whether Bachmann intends to drop out.

Bachmann, 55, told a small group of supporters Tuesday night that she was staying in the presidential race ? despite her sixth place finish ? as the only true conservative who can defeat President Barack Obama. But her campaign is known to be low on money.

Her campaign peaked early with a first place finish in the Iowa GOP's summer straw poll, but by mid- to late September polling showed Bachmann in single digits. She focused her campaign efforts on Iowa, where she grew up.

The New Hampshire primary is the next contest in the race. But Bachmann's strategy had her effectively writing off that Jan. 10 contest and focusing on the Southern state that, at least on paper, is a better fit for her brand of conservatism. The South Carolina primary is on Jan. 21.
