UCF?s Freeman jumps to the list-of-ten as a freshman

February 2, 2012

NEW ORLEANS ? Oklahoma redshirt junior Tia Brooks and UCF freshman Octavious Freeman were named to the latest update of The Bowerman women?s watch list on Wednesday. Brooks is the collegiate leader in the shot put as the only this season to throw for over 60 feet this season. Freeman, within the first two collegiate meets of her career, has clocked the collegiate-leading 60-meter time of 7.23 seconds.

Brooks (Grand Rapids, Mich.) marked a collegiate-leading put of 60-8 (18.49m) two weekends ago at Oklahoma?s JD Martin Duals for the victory. In addition, the mark moved her to fifth on the all-time collegiate indoor performers list.

Freeman (Lake Wales, Fla.) notched a collegiate-leading, season?s best of 7.23 seconds in the 60 meters to finish as the top collegian at the Auburn Invitational two weekends ago. She was also the winner of the VT Invitational 60 meters in 7.27 the week prior. Through two meets and four rounds, Freeman has clocked 7.27 or better on three occasions this year.

It is the first time Brooks or Freeman has landed on the Watch List.

For this update, new to the ?also receiving mention? list ? a group of great athletes just outside of the Watch List?s ten ? are Clemson freshman Dezerea Bryant, Washington sophomore Katie Flood, Southern Illinois?s Jeneva McCall, Academy of Art?s Vashti Thomas, and Stony Brook?s Lucy Van Dalen.

QUICKLY ? The Watch List

Brigetta Barrett, Arizona ? Barrett is so far two-for-two in the victories department this season in the high jump. But, more impressively she cleared 6-5? (2.00m) but missed all three. Barrett is the current American leader in the high jump and ranks second in the world for the year.

Tia Brooks, Oklahoma ? Brooks is the collegiate leader in the shot put as the only this season to throw for over 60 feet this season, having marked a put of 60-8 (18.49m) two weekends ago at Oklahoma?s JD Martin Duals for the victory. She was also the winner of the VT Invitational 60 meters in 7.27 the week prior. Through two meets and four rounds, Freeman has clocked 7.27 or better on three occasions this year.

Jordan Hasay, Oregon ? Winner of the Mile at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge last weekend with a time of 4:37.29. Last weekend she also ran the anchor leg with a 4:35.75 split in leading Oregon?s DMR to victory. The DMR?s time of 10:56.331 is the second-best collegiate time in 2012 and the eighth-best legal time (non-oversized track) of all time. Hasay currently ranks No. 5 in the world in the Mile.

Anne Kesselring, Oregon ? Last weekend at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge, Kesselring opened the season with a 2:05.77 clocking in the 800 meters, taking second to Tennessee?s Chanelle Price. However, the great accomplishment of the weekend was her contribution as the opening 1200-meter leg, split at 3:20.69, of the Ducks? DMR that clocked 10:56.31 ? the second-best collegiate time this season so far and the eighth all-time best.

Sheila Reid, Villanova ? Has yet to compete.

Tina Sutej, Arkansas ? Sutej has won two meets so far this season in the pole vault, continuing her indoor winning streak that now spans nine meets and dates back to beginning of the 2011 season. Her best clearance of the season for the collegiate-record holder came last weekend at the Razorback Invitational where she went over the bar at 14-7? (4.45m).

Brianne Theisen, Oregon ? Theisen started the 2012 indoor season exactly the same she finished the 2011 indoor season ? with a collegiate record in the pentathlon. Last weekend at Texas A&M?s Mondo Challenge, Theisen scored 4,555 points to top her own collegiate record of 4,540 set last year in winning the NCAA title. For Theisen, her last three pentathlons have been collegiate-record breaking performances. In last weekend?s pentathlon, Theisen also cleared 6-2 (1.88m) in the high jump ? a performance that ranks second among all collegians so far this season. Theisen?s 4,555 also broke the Canadian record of 4,550 that was set in 1982 and ranks No. 2 in the world for 2012.

Motorola RAZR Developer Edition on the way to Europe, unlocked bootloader in tow

Motorola RAZR

More news coming out of Motorola today surrounding the RAZR. Yet another variant is on its way, only this time it's coming with an unlocked bootloader

The Motorola RAZR Developer Edition will be available in Europe first, and is available for pre-order right now through Moto's own online store. They make a point of letting you know that phone will be sold without any warranty and will set you back 499 (about $660.)

In a statement on the official Motorola Blog, the company claims that releasing a developer edition allows them to continue to meet their carrier and regulatory obligations, but also meets the needs being expressed by their developer community. While the idea of an unlocked RAZRs isn't new -- Ausdroid scored the scoop on that way back in October -- at the time it seemed like a half-assed nod to developers and hackers, and that carriers would still have the option to (and undoubtedly would) keep the bootloaders locket up tight.

But what about you guys in the U.S.? While the Developer Edition is a Europe-only launch, plans are in place to launch an "unlockable developer device" in the State though the MOTODEV network. No time-frame is listed for this as yet though, and Motorola doesn't actually say whether it's the RAZR, or perhaps the newer RAZR MAXX with its larger battery, or maybe a different device altogether.

The addition of the RAZR Developer Edition gives Motorola two "developer" devices in its stable, the other being the Motorola XOOM tablet, the first to show off Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and now the first to get an update to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Hit the links below for more info and to order in the EU.

(AP) ? About 300 people were arrested Saturday during a chaotic day of Occupy protests that saw demonstrators break into City Hall and burn an American flag, as police earlier fired tear gas and bean bags to disperse hundreds of people after some threw rocks and bottles and tore down fencing outside a nearby convention center.

Dozens of police officers remained on guard outside City Hall around midnight following the most turbulent day of protests since November, when Oakland police forcefully dismantled an Occupy encampment. An exasperated Mayor Jean Quan, who faced heavy criticism for the police action last fall, called on the Occupy movement to "stop using Oakland as its playground."

"People in the community and people in the Occupy movement have to stop making excuses for this behavior," Quan said.

Protesters clashed with police throughout the day, at times throwing rocks, bottles and other objects at officers. And police responded by deploying smoke, tear gas and bean bag rounds, City Administrator Deanna Santanta said.

"These demonstrators stated their intention was to provoke officers and engage in illegal activity and that's exactly what has occurred today," Santana said.

Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan said about 300 arrests were made.

The group assembled outside City Hall late Saturday morning and marched through the streets, disrupting traffic as they threatened to take over the vacant Henry Kaiser Convention Center.

The protesters walked to the vacant convention center, where some started tearing down perimeter fencing and "destroying construction equipment" shortly before 3 p.m., police said.

Police said they issued a dispersal order and used smoke and tear gas after some protesters pelted them with bottles, rocks, burning flares and other objects.

The number of demonstrators swelled as the day wore on, with afternoon estimates ranging from about 1,000 to 2,000 people.

A majority of the arrests came after police took scores of protesters into custody as they marched through the city's downtown, with some entering a YMCA building, said Sgt. Jeff Thomason, a police spokesman.

Around the same time police were taking people into custody near the YMCA, about dozens of officers surrounded City Hall, while others swept the inside of the building looking for protesters who had broken into the building, then ran out of the building with American flags before officers arrived.

The protest group issued an email criticizing police, saying "Occupy Oakland's building occupation, an act of constitutionally protected civil disobedience was disrupted by a brutal police response today."

Michael Davis, 32, who is originally from Ohio and was in the Occupy movement in Cincinnati, said Saturday was a very hectic day that originally started off calm but escalated when police began using "flash bangs, tear gas, smoke grenades and bean bags."

"It was very emotional. I thought it was a very good day for the movement because it brought us back together," Davis said. "We all were here in spirit and everybody actually helped everyone today.

"What could've been handled differently is the way the Oakland police came at us," Davis said. "We were peaceful."

Quan blamed the destruction on a small "very radical, violent" splinter group within Occupy Oakland.

"This is not a situation where we had a 1,000 peaceful people and a few violent people. If you look at what's happening today in terms of destructing property, throwing at and charging the police, it's almost like they are begging for attention and hoping that the police will make an error."

Quan said that at one point, many forced their way into City Hall, where they burned flags, broke an electrical box and damaged several art structures, including a recycled art exhibit created by children.

"City Hall is closed for the weekend. There is no excuse for behavior we've witnessed this evening," City Council President Larry Reid said during a news briefing Saturday. "It's just unacceptable and makes absolutely no sense for the type of behavior we've seen on the streets in the city of Oakland today."

Oakland Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente, echoed Reid's sentiments and said that what was going on amounts to "domestic terrorism."

"This is domestic terrorism and we cannot allow this to continue because something even more worse could really happen," De La Fuente said.

The demonstration comes after Occupy protesters said earlier this week that they planned to move into a vacant building and turn it into a social center and political hub. They also threatened to try to shut down the port, occupy the airport and take over City Hall.

Oakland officials said Friday that since the Occupy Oakland encampment was first established in late October, police have arrested about 300 people.

The national Occupy Wall Street movement, which denounces corporate excess and economic inequality, began in New York City in the fall but has been largely dormant lately.

Oakland, New York and Los Angeles were among the cities with the largest and most vocal Occupy protests early on. The demonstrations ebbed after those cities used force to move out hundreds of demonstrators who had set up tent cities.

In Oakland, the police department received heavy criticism for using force to break up earlier protests. Among the critics was Mayor Jean Quan, who said she wasn't briefed on the department's plans.

On Saturday, Quan seemed to have changed her tune on how police have been handling the demonstrations and protests.

"Our officers have been very measured," Quan said. "Were there some mistakes made? There may be. I would say the Oakland police and our allies, so far a small percentage of mistakes. "But quite frankly, a majority of protesters who were charging the police were clearly not being peaceful.

Earlier this month, a court-appointed monitor submitted a report to a federal judge that included "serious concerns" about the department's handling of the Occupy protests.

Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan said late Saturday that he was in "close contact" with the federal monitor during the protests.

Quan added, "If the demonstrators think that because we are working more closely with the monitor now that we won't do what we have to do to uphold the law and try keep people safe in this city, they're wrong."

American Idol to President Obama & Al Green: Sing For Us!

If you haven't seen the video of President Obama singing Al Green at a fundraiser at New York City's legendary Apollo Theater last week, you need to.

No matter what you think of his views, the Prez proved with his riff on "Let's Stay Together" that he's got pipes! And we weren't the only ones impressed.

American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe Tweeted an offer to the Commander in Chief that he can't refuse. Or at least he shouldn't:

"@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we'd love to invite you on to #AmericanIdol this Season for a duet with Al Green."

Now that would be the DVR moment of the decade.

We're gonna guess that Obama will cite scheduling conflicts and pass, but if you think about it, what better way to win over voters in an election year?

Okay, perhaps a robust economy would be a bigger ballot box boost, but you get the idea. The guy's vocal chops need to be showcased more often.

Obama to senators: Change the way you do business

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is pressing his case for changes in how the Senate does business, hoping to ease the partisan gridlock, and he wants to bar lawmakers from profiting from their service.

In his radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama said many people he met during his five-state tour after his State of the Union address were optimistic but remained unsure "that the right thing will get done in Washington this year, or next year, or the year after that."

"And frankly, when you look at some of the things that go on in this town, who could blame them for being a little cynical?" Obama said.

The president reiterated his calls for government reform made in Tuesday's address, saying he wants the Senate to pass a rule that requires a yes-or-no vote for judicial and public service nominations after 90 days. Many of the nominees, he said, carry bipartisan support but get held up in Congress for political reasons.

Obama noted that "a senator from Utah" said he would hold up nominations because he opposed the recess appointment of the head of the new consumer protection agency and three members of the National Labor Relations Board. Obama put the officials in their post during the Senate's holiday break; many Republicans have called that move unconstitutional. Obama said the American people deserve "better than gridlock and games."

"One senator gumming up the works for the whole country is certainly not what our founding fathers envisioned," the president said.

While Obama did not name the lawmaker, Utah GOP. Sen Mike Lee said Thursday that because of the president's "blatant and egregious disregard both for proper constitutional procedures and the Senate's unquestioned role in such appointments, I find myself duty-bound to resist the consideration and approval of additional nominations until the president takes steps to remedy the situation."

Obama said he also wants Congress to pass legislation to ban insider trading by lawmakers and prohibit lawmakers from owning securities in companies that have business before their committees.

In addition, the president is seeking to prohibit people who "bundle" campaign contributions from other donors for members of Congress from lobbying Congress. Obama urged the public to contact their member of Congress and tell them "that it's time to end the gridlock and start tackling the issues that really matter."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., delivering the GOP address, said Obama's address to Congress lacked much discussion of the president's achievements "because there isn't much."

"This president didn't talk about his record for one simple reason," Rubio said. "He doesn't want you to know about it. But you do know about it, because your feel the failure of his leadership every single day of the week."

Rubio accused the president of driving up the national debt, failing to reduce high unemployment across the country and offering divisive economic policies.

The Florida senator said there is a growing gap between the rich and the poor but the best way to solve the problem is by embracing the American free enterprise system. Rubio said he hopes 2012 "will be the beginning of our work toward a new and prosperous American century."

Starbucks CEO paid $16 million in 2011 fiscal year

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz was given a pay package worth roughly $16 million in the company's 2011 fiscal year.

Starbucks performed well last year, but Schultz's compensation shrank by 26 percent compared to 2010, when he was given $22 million for bringing the company roaring back from the recession and more than doubling its profit.

Schultz received a nearly $1.4 million salary in 2011, according to a document filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That's up 8 percent from the $1.3 million salary in the prior year. His cash performance bonus, as well as the value of his stock and option awards, shrank.

Starbucks gave him stock awards in 2011 worth $5.5 million, which is down 48 percent from the $10.5 million he was awarded the prior year. He was also given option awards worth nearly $6 million, down 4 percent from the $6.2 million in the prior year.

The company gave him a cash performance bonus of nearly $3 million in 2011, down from $3.5 million the prior year.

Schultz also received $235,294 in other perks such as security and use of the company plane, compared with $231,664 in perks the year before.

Starbucks continued its strong performance in 2011, as more customers began to visit its stores around the globe. The Seattle-based company's 2011 fiscal year revenue increased 7 percent to $11.7 billion and its profit jumped nearly 32 percent to $1.25 billion, or $1.62 per share.

The Associated Press formula calculates an executive's total compensation during the last fiscal year by adding salary, bonuses, perks, above-market interest the company pays on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year. The AP formula does not count changes in the present value of pension benefits. That makes the AP total slightly different in most cases from the total reported by companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The value that a company assigned to an executive's stock and option awards for 2011 was the present value of what the company expected the awards to be worth to the executive over time. Companies use one of several formulas to calculate that value. However, the number is just an estimate, and what an executive ultimately receives will depend on the performance of the company's stock in the years after the awards are granted. Most stock compensation programs require an executive to wait a specified amount of time to receive shares or exercise options.
