Hit man picked hitmanforhire.net to promote services

19 hrs.

You can order a bouquet of roses on flowers.com, a novel from books.com and new lenses from contacts.com. So why shouldn't you be able to put a price on someone's head using hitmanforhire.net? Don't laugh ? because a man really was foolish enough to offer his services as a contract killer using that very domain.

Before you rush to give this fella the benefit of the doubt and suggest that he might've simply been extremely brilliant and hidden his criminal enterprise in plain sight, you should consider that even the Web developer he'd hired to build his website couldn't take him seriously. The entire tale sounds like something straight out of a funny movie.

And it might even become a funny movie. Hitmanforhire.net?was recently acquired by a production company which is claiming to be working on a film about the bumbling contract killer.

We're not entirely confident that this claim will truly be followed by some sort of cinematic blockbuster as?Michael Duke Productions, the company which currently owns the hitmanforhire.net domain, doesn't seem to have put much effort into crafting (or proofreading) the current site. But who knows? Even the leanest filmography can be deceptive.

Movie or no movie, we can still learn about the history of hitmanforhire.net and its original owner thanks to the?LA Times'?Victoria Kim, who wrote up a thorough report of the entire ? and extremely bizarre ??tale?(which thankfully never resulted?in any deaths).

The main character in the story is Essam Ahmed Eid, an Egyptian-born man who worked as a poker dealer in Las Vegas. In 2006, he suddenly decided to change careers, hiring a Florida-based man to build hitmanforhire.net. ?After launching the site, Eid did "what any modern-day neophyte would do with a new task." He turned to Google.?

Yes, you read that right ? the contract killer turned to Google to research killing methods and murder weapons. As Kim reveals:

Between numerous searches for Clay Aiken ? Eid's wife was an avid fan ? [an FBI agent] found records showing that Eid had surfed the Web about his new trade. He looked up how to make a homemade silencer from toilet parts, attempted to place an Internet order for cyanide, and researched ricin ? the castor bean-derived poison famously used in the 1978 assassination of Bulgarian dissident journalist Georgi Markov through an umbrella gun.

It didn't take long for people to inquire about Eid's services, explains Kim. "A fifth-grade girl in Kentucky wanted another girl in her class dead. Several volunteered to kill for hire. One woman wanted help committing suicide."

Eid was in business now! But despite all the thorough research he conducted and even though he'd made highly toxic ricin powder in his garage, the man didn't seem to be keen on the idea of actually killing someone. Whenever a customer put out a hit, Eid took a cash deposit and then approached the would-be-victim with an offer to spare his or her life in exchange for an additional fee.

Naturally that's how he got caught in the end.

One of the individuals Eid attempted to extort approached the FBI after the man showed up in her home and explained that her ex-boyfriend?deposited $17,000 to have her "done by a shot in the head." Eid would let her live if she paid the balance on the $37,000 job within three days. For some?inexplicable reason, he?gave her his real name during his strange business proposal.

The upshot, leaving out some amazing twists and turns from Kim's comedy of errors, is thatEid found himself in the middle of a six-week trial in Dublin in 2008. He was "convicted of extortion and burglary, but acquitted of solicitation of murder." He was sentenced to six years of prison time there and another 33 months after being extradited to the United States. He is currently in a federal prison in Mississippi, but may be released as early as Nov. 2013.

There's no word on when the corresponding movie will supposedly hit theaters.

CHARDON, Ohio (AP) ? The family of a teenager suspected of opening fire in the cafeteria of a suburban Cleveland high school, killing one student and wounding four others, says it is "devastated" by the shootings.

In a statement issued to WKYC-TV in Cleveland Monday night (http://on.wkyc.com/A4Yohv ), a lawyer representing the family of T.J. Lane offered "their most heartfelt and sincere condolences" to the family of slain student Daniel Parmertor, adding that they are praying for the four other injured students from Chardon High School.

Lawyer Robert Farinacci says Lane's family is trying to understand how the tragedy happened.

The shooting Monday morning sent students at the 1,100-student school screaming through the halls.

The FBI says the suspect was arrested near his car a half-mile from Chardon. He was not immediately charged.

Anonymous attacks 'alarming,' says top security adviser

14 hrs.

The? vigilante group known as? Anonymous has claimed credit for yet another of its weekly cyber? attacks, fueling high level concerns among U.S. national security officials that the so-called ?hackivists? are posing an increasing threat to government and private sector websites and computer systems.

?What we?ve seen from Anonymous is alarming,? Michael Leiter, the former director of the National Counter-Terrorism Center and a member of a US. Government advisory board on cybersecurity, said in an interview. ?Their? ability to repeatedly take down government websites and potentially penetrate those websites shows that the group is quite committed ? and growing in its ability to perpetrate cyber attacks.?

In keeping with its pledge to launch cyber attacks every Friday, hackers associated with Anonymous today took credit for defacing?a website associated with InfraGard, an organization that partners with the FBI to share information about potential cybersecurity threats.

?We broke into their webserver, perused their assorted presentation materials, and finally deleted everything and vandalized their website,? according to a statement posted on the Ohio chapter of InfraGard. The group describes itself as an association of businesses, academic institutions and law enforcement agencies that shares intelligence ?to prevent hostile acts against the United States.? The hackers in their statement called InfraGard? a ?sinister alliance between law enforcement, corporations, and white hat wannabees.? (InfraGard did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.)

The attack is the latest in a series of weekly strikes? that appear to have confounded U.S.? cyber security officials and prompted an ever expanding probe by the FBI. These have included temporarily shutting down the CIA?s public web site,?penetrating a transatlantic FBI conference call with Scotland Yard?about ongoing? investigations into hackers, taking down? the Federal Trade Commission?s website and penetrating the computers of a Washingto area law firm and dumping thousands of its private emails ? including some with members of Congress onto the Internet.

In a statement last week, hackers calling themselves AntiSec ? an Anonymous affiliate ? vowed to? keep up the strikes. ?Yes, each and every Friday, we will be launching attacks ... with the specific purpose of wiping as many corrupt corporate and government systems off our Internet,? the group stated.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Gen. Keith Alexander, the director of the National Security Agency, recently privately warned White House officials that?Anonymous hackers could have the ability to cause a limited power outage within the two years?through a cyber attack on the U.S. electrical grid. The warnings were reportedly conveyed in a meeting chaired by John Brennan, President Obama?s chief homeland security advisor. (A White House spokeswoman said in an email? she could not discuss ?interagency deliberations? but that the ?the Administration has made cybersecurity a top priority and we are working tirelessly to protect ourselves from the threats we face.?)

Anonymous has never proclaimed it has such a goal and other national security experts said there is debate about whether private hackers would be able to successfully penetrate the U.s. electrical grid within the next few years.

But Leiter, who is now an NBC News consultant, said the report reflects a ?steady drumbeat? of warnings? from the NSA about cyber intrusions in recent years???both by private hackers and even more sophisticated ?state actors.?

?There are some similarities to the pre 9/11 warnings from the intelligence community? about a possible terror attack, Leiter said. ?People really worry about two things ? the theft of enormous amounts of intellectual? property and the economic damage that it can do to the country.?

Moreover, Leiter said, the publicly reported cyber intrusions by groups like Anonymous are dwarfed by an even greater and more ominous hacking attacks that have been discovered b the intelligence community.

?What we are seeing in the public realm is the tip of the iceberg,? he said.
